Cathedral Pass Trail

The Cathedral Pass Trail, nestled in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness near Kittitas County, Washington, offers hikers a moderately challenging journey through diverse landscapes. Spanning approximately 14 kilometers (about 8.7 miles) with an elevation gain of roughly 700 meters (about 2300 feet), this out-and-back trail is a favorite among those seeking both alpine scenery and a bit of a workout.

Getting to the Trailhead

To reach the trailhead, you can drive or take public transportation to the nearest town, which is Cle Elum. From there, you'll need to navigate to the Cathedral Pass Trailhead by car. The trailhead is accessible via Forest Road 4330, which branches off from Salmon La Sac Road. Parking is available at the trailhead, but it's wise to arrive early during peak season as spaces can fill up quickly.

The Hike Itself

As you embark on the Cathedral Pass Trail, the first few kilometers will take you through dense forest, with the path gradually ascending. The canopy of old-growth trees provides shade and a cool environment, making this section of the hike pleasant even on warmer days. Keep an eye out for the variety of flora, including wildflowers in the spring and summer months.

As you progress, the trail begins to open up, offering glimpses of the surrounding peaks. The terrain becomes more rugged, and the climb more pronounced. You'll encounter switchbacks that ease the ascent, but be prepared for a steady uphill trek.

Alpine Meadows and Mountain Views

Upon reaching the halfway point, approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) in, you'll find yourself surrounded by expansive alpine meadows. This area is known for its stunning wildflower displays, particularly in July and August. The meadows also provide an opportunity to spot wildlife, including deer, marmots, and if you're lucky, the occasional elk.

The trail continues to weave through the meadows, with Cathedral Rock looming overhead. This is a good place to take a break and enjoy the scenery before tackling the final push to the pass.

Historical Significance

The Alpine Lakes Wilderness has a rich history, with the area being used by Native American tribes for hunting and fishing. European settlers later explored these lands, and by the early 20th century, the region became popular for outdoor recreation. The creation of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in 1976 helped to preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of the area.

Final Ascent and Cathedral Pass

The last stretch to Cathedral Pass is the most challenging, with a series of switchbacks leading you to the highest point of the hike. Once at the pass, approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the start, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The pass is a great spot for a well-deserved rest and a chance to take in the vistas before beginning your descent.

Navigation and Preparation

Before heading out, it's recommended to download the trail map onto your HiiKER app, as it will be an invaluable tool for navigation. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can provide peace of mind, especially in areas where the path may be less distinct.

It's important to come prepared with adequate water, food, and layers of clothing, as the weather can change rapidly in the mountains. Also, be sure to check the trail conditions and weather forecast before your hike, as snow can linger on the trail well into the summer months.

Wildlife and Conservation

While hiking, it's crucial to practice Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the wilderness for future generations. Be mindful of the wildlife in the area by keeping a safe distance and not feeding the animals. Properly dispose of waste and stay on the designated trail to minimize your impact on the fragile alpine environment.

The Cathedral Pass Trail offers a memorable experience for hikers, with its mix of forested paths, alpine meadows, and stunning mountain vistas. Whether you're seeking solitude, a physical challenge, or simply the beauty of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, this trail is sure to deliver.
