Trail Overview

The trail begins with a gentle ascent through a dense forest of Douglas fir and western hemlock. The first 2 km (1.2 miles) are relatively easy, with an elevation gain of about 150 meters (492 feet). This section is well-marked and offers a good warm-up for the more challenging parts ahead.

Mid-Trail Landmarks

Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you'll encounter a small, picturesque waterfall. This is a great spot to take a short break and enjoy the natural beauty. The trail then becomes steeper, with switchbacks that will take you up another 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation over the next 2 km (1.2 miles).

Wildlife and Flora

As you ascend, keep an eye out for local wildlife such as black-tailed deer and various bird species, including the Steller's jay and the northern flicker. The flora changes as well, with more alpine plants like lupine and Indian paintbrush appearing as you gain elevation.

Historical Significance

This region has a rich history, once being home to the indigenous Coast Salish people. The trail itself was used by early settlers and loggers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Remnants of old logging equipment can still be seen near the 6 km (3.7 miles) mark, adding a historical dimension to your hike.

Final Ascent

The last 2 km (1.2 miles) are the most challenging, with an elevation gain of about 450 meters (1,476 feet). The trail narrows and becomes rocky, requiring careful footing. However, the effort is well worth it as you approach the summit.

The Summit

Upon reaching the summit, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding Cascade Range and, on clear days, even a glimpse of Mount Rainier. This is an excellent spot for photos and a well-deserved rest before heading back down.

Navigation

For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on track.

Descent

The descent follows the same path back to the trailhead. While it's easier on the lungs, the steep sections can be tough on the knees, so take your time and use trekking poles if you have them.

This trail offers a mix of natural beauty, historical interest, and physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for those who take it on.
