“Explore a 3 km scenic loop with historical relics and panoramic views, perfect for keen hikers.”
Starting near King County, Washington, the Summit West Trail and Bettys Trail form a scenic loop of approximately 3 km (1.86 miles) with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty and historical significance, making it a rewarding experience for hikers of all levels.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the Snoqualmie Pass area, and park near the Summit West Ski Area. For those using public transport, take a bus to the North Bend Park and Ride, and from there, you can catch a local shuttle or taxi to the trailhead.
For navigation, I recommend using the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on track.
As you embark on the trail, you'll first encounter a gentle ascent through a dense forest of Douglas fir and western hemlock. The initial 0.5 km (0.31 miles) is relatively easy, allowing you to acclimate to the terrain. Keep an eye out for the diverse bird species that inhabit this area, including the Pacific wren and the varied thrush.
Around the 1 km (0.62 miles) mark, you'll come across remnants of old logging operations from the early 20th century. This region was once a bustling hub for timber extraction, and you can still see the old rail tracks and machinery parts scattered along the trail. These relics offer a glimpse into the area's industrial past and its transformation into a natural haven.
As you continue, the trail begins to climb more steeply, gaining about 50 meters (164 feet) in elevation over the next 0.5 km (0.31 miles). This section can be a bit challenging, but the effort is well worth it. At approximately 1.5 km (0.93 miles), you'll reach a clearing that offers stunning panoramic views of the Cascade Range. On a clear day, you can see Mount Rainier in the distance, a sight that is sure to take your breath away.
The trail then loops back, descending gradually through a meadow filled with wildflowers in the spring and summer months. Look out for lupines, Indian paintbrush, and columbines. This area is also a habitat for black-tailed deer and occasionally, black bears. Always maintain a safe distance and follow local guidelines for wildlife encounters.
The last 1 km (0.62 miles) of the trail is a gentle descent back into the forest, leading you back to the trailhead. This section is relatively easy and provides a peaceful end to your hike, with the sounds of a nearby creek accompanying you.
Using the HiiKER app will ensure you have the most up-to-date information and can navigate the trail with confidence. Enjoy your hike!
