“Explore Squak Mountain's scenic peaks and historical landmarks on this rewarding 10 km loop trail.”
Starting your adventure near King County, Washington, the Squak Mountain West Peak and Central Peak via Bullit Fireplace Trail offers a rewarding 10 km (6.2 miles) loop with an elevation gain of approximately 500 meters (1,640 feet). This medium-difficulty trail is perfect for those looking to experience the natural beauty and historical significance of the region.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the Issaquah Alps and park at the Squak Mountain State Park parking lot, located near the intersection of SE May Valley Road and SE 79th Street. For those using public transport, take a bus to Issaquah Transit Center and then a short taxi or rideshare to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush, dense forest, characterized by towering Douglas firs and western red cedars. As you progress, you'll encounter the Bullit Fireplace, a significant landmark approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike. This old stone fireplace is a remnant of a cabin that once stood here, offering a glimpse into the area's past.
Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including black-tailed deer, coyotes, and a variety of bird species such as woodpeckers and owls. The forest floor is often carpeted with ferns and mosses, adding to the trail's enchanting atmosphere.
Continuing from the Bullit Fireplace, the trail becomes steeper as you approach the West Peak. At around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, you'll reach the summit, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the nearby Issaquah Alps and, on clear days, the distant Olympic Mountains.
From the West Peak, the trail descends slightly before climbing again towards the Central Peak. This section is about 2 km (1.2 miles) and features a mix of switchbacks and straight climbs. The Central Peak offers another excellent vantage point, with views that are equally breathtaking.
For navigation, it's recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool ensures you stay on track, especially in areas where the path may be less distinct.
After soaking in the views from the Central Peak, the trail loops back towards the starting point. The descent is gradual, allowing you to enjoy the serene forest environment. The final stretch of the trail is relatively flat, making for a pleasant end to your hike.
The Squak Mountain area has a rich history, with evidence of early logging activities and remnants of old homesteads. The Bullit Fireplace is a testament to the region's past, providing a tangible connection to the early settlers who once called this area home.
Ensure you bring plenty of water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for changing weather conditions. The trail can be muddy in sections, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Always check the weather forecast before heading out and let someone know your hiking plans for safety.
Embark on this trail to experience the natural beauty, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife that Squak Mountain has to offer.
