“Explore lush Pacific Northwest forests, historical landmarks, and stunning Puget Sound views on this moderate hike.”
Starting near King County, Washington, the South Beach Trail is an inviting 2 km (1.24 miles) out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of approximately 100 meters (328 feet). This trail offers a moderate challenge, making it suitable for hikers with some experience.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the nearest known address, which is the Seahurst Park, located at 1600 SW Seahurst Park Rd, Burien, WA 98166. There is ample parking available at the park. For those using public transport, take the King County Metro bus to the Burien Transit Center, and from there, it's a short taxi or rideshare trip to Seahurst Park.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience.
The trail begins at the Seahurst Park parking lot, where you will immediately be greeted by the lush greenery typical of the Pacific Northwest. As you start your hike, you'll notice the trail gently ascending through a dense forest of Douglas firs and western red cedars. The first 0.5 km (0.31 miles) is relatively easy, with a gradual incline that allows you to acclimate to the terrain.
At around the 1 km (0.62 miles) mark, you'll reach a small clearing that offers a stunning view of Puget Sound. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; it's not uncommon to see bald eagles soaring above or seals playing in the water below.
Continuing on, the trail becomes a bit steeper as you approach the 1.5 km (0.93 miles) point. Here, the elevation gain becomes more noticeable, and the path may be slightly more challenging due to exposed roots and rocks. However, the effort is well worth it as you near the end of the trail.
The South Beach Trail is not just a natural wonder but also a site of historical significance. The area around Seahurst Park has been inhabited by Native American tribes for thousands of years. The Duwamish people, in particular, have a rich history in this region. As you hike, take a moment to appreciate the cultural heritage that permeates the landscape.
The final stretch of the trail leads you to South Beach, a serene and relatively secluded spot perfect for a picnic or simply relaxing by the water. The beach offers panoramic views of the Sound and, on clear days, you can see the Olympic Mountains in the distance.
The return journey follows the same path back to the trailhead, offering a different perspective on the beautiful surroundings. Remember to pace yourself, especially on the steeper sections, and enjoy the tranquility of the forest as you make your way back.
This hike is a perfect blend of natural beauty, moderate physical challenge, and historical richness, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
