The trail begins at the Red Town Trailhead, where you’ll find ample parking and informative signboards about the area’s history and natural features. The trailhead is well-marked, and you can use the HiiKER app for precise navigation throughout your hike.
This area is rich in history, particularly from the coal mining era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As you hike, you’ll come across remnants of old mining operations, including rusted machinery and abandoned mine shafts. Informative plaques along the trail provide context and historical background, making this hike not just a physical journey but an educational one as well.
About 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you’ll encounter the first significant landmark: the Quarry. This open area offers a glimpse into the region’s mining past and provides a unique landscape for photography. The trail then meanders through lush forest, characterized by towering Douglas firs and western red cedars.
At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll reach Coal Creek Falls, a picturesque waterfall that cascades down a rocky slope. This is a great spot to take a break, enjoy a snack, and soak in the natural beauty. The falls are particularly impressive during the rainy season when the water flow is at its peak.
The trail is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for native plants like sword ferns, salal, and Oregon grape. Wildlife sightings are common, with deer, raccoons, and various bird species frequently spotted along the trail. If you’re lucky, you might even see a black bear or a bobcat, though they tend to be elusive.
The trail is well-maintained but can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Good hiking boots with strong grip are recommended. There are a few steep sections, particularly near the falls, so take your time and use trekking poles if needed. Always stay on marked paths to avoid old mine shafts and unstable ground.
Using the HiiKER app will help you stay on track and provide real-time updates on your location. There are no restrooms along the trail, so plan accordingly. The Red Town Trailhead has basic amenities, including restrooms and picnic tables.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for those who venture out to explore it.
