“Accessible and scenic, the Old Naches and West Loop Trail offers lush forests, historical landmarks, and serene river views.”
Starting near King County, Washington, the Old Naches and West Loop Trail offers a delightful 5 km (approximately 3.1 miles) loop with no significant elevation gain, making it accessible for a wide range of hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the town of Naches, which can be reached by car or public transport. If driving, you can park at the designated lot near the Naches Ranger Station. For those using public transport, buses from Seattle or Yakima can drop you off at nearby stops, from where a short walk will lead you to the trailhead.
The trail is well-marked and maintained, making navigation straightforward. However, it’s always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The terrain is relatively flat, with a mix of dirt paths and gravel, making it suitable for hikers of all skill levels.
As you embark on the trail, you'll be greeted by a lush canopy of Douglas firs and Western hemlocks. The underbrush is rich with ferns and wildflowers, especially vibrant in the spring and early summer. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer, squirrels, and a variety of bird species such as woodpeckers and jays.
About 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you’ll come across the remnants of an old logging camp, a nod to the region's historical significance in the timber industry. Informational plaques provide context and history, making it a great spot to take a break and learn more about the area.
At the halfway point, roughly 2.5 km (1.55 miles) in, the trail opens up to a beautiful meadow, offering panoramic views of the surrounding hills. This is an ideal spot for a picnic or a rest. Benches and picnic tables are available, and the open space is perfect for birdwatching.
The Old Naches and West Loop Trail is steeped in history. The area was originally inhabited by the Yakama Nation, and later became a hub for logging in the early 20th century. The trail itself follows some of the old logging routes, and you can still see traces of the past in the form of old machinery and rail tracks.
As you near the end of the loop, the trail meanders alongside the Naches River for about 1 km (0.6 miles). The gentle sound of flowing water adds a serene backdrop to the final leg of your hike. This section is particularly beautiful in the fall when the leaves change color, creating a picturesque landscape.
The loop brings you back to the starting point near the Naches Ranger Station. From here, you can easily find your way back to your car or the nearest bus stop for your return journey.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and accessibility, making it a must-visit for anyone in the King County area.
