“Conquer the rugged Mailbox Peak for stunning vistas and a rewarding hike in King County, Washington.”
Starting your adventure near King County, Washington, the Mailbox Peak Old Trail and Mailbox Peak Trail offer a challenging yet rewarding experience. This loop trail spans approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) with a significant elevation gain of around 1500 meters (4921 feet).
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River Road, where you'll find the parking area near the intersection with SE Middle Fork Road. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the North Bend Park & Ride. From there, you can take a taxi or rideshare service to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a steep ascent through dense forest, offering a rigorous workout right from the start. The Old Trail is known for its challenging, unrelenting climb, while the newer Mailbox Peak Trail provides a more gradual ascent with switchbacks. Both trails converge near the summit, allowing you to choose your preferred route up and down.
The Mailbox Peak area has a rich history tied to the logging industry that once thrived in the region. The trail itself was named after the mailbox placed at the summit by early hikers, which has since become a beloved tradition.
For the descent, you can either retrace your steps down the Old Trail for a quicker, albeit steeper, return or take the newer trail for a more gradual and scenic route back to the trailhead.
Given the trail's difficulty, it's essential to be well-prepared. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and layers of clothing to adapt to changing weather conditions. Good hiking boots are a must due to the rocky and uneven terrain. Always check the weather forecast before heading out and let someone know your plans.
