The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience.### Trail Description The trail begins at the main parking area of Kanaskat-Palmer State Park. As you start, you'll be greeted by a lush forest of Douglas firs and western red cedars. The first section of the trail is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging parts ahead.### Significant Landmarks and Nature About 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you'll come across the Green River, a serene spot perfect for a short break. The river is known for its clear waters and is a popular spot for fishing and kayaking. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, raccoons, and a variety of bird species including bald eagles and ospreys.### Elevation Gain As you continue, the trail starts to ascend gradually. The next 1.5 km (0.9 miles) will take you through a series of switchbacks, gaining approximately 50 meters (164 feet) in elevation. This section can be a bit strenuous, so take your time and enjoy the surrounding flora and fauna.### Historical Significance The area around Kanaskat-Palmer has a rich history. It was originally inhabited by the Coast Salish people, who used the Green River for fishing and transportation. In the early 20th century, the area became a hub for logging and mining activities. Remnants of old logging roads and equipment can still be seen along the trail, adding a historical dimension to your hike.### Final Stretch The last 1.5 km (0.9 miles) of the loop is a gentle descent back towards the trailhead.
