“Embark on a scenic 6 km hike near Snoqualmie Pass, blending natural beauty, history, and moderate challenge.”
Starting your adventure near King County, Washington, the Hall Creek and Zig Zag Loop Trail offers a moderately challenging hike with a total distance of around 6 km (approximately 3.7 miles) and an elevation gain of about 600 meters (around 1,970 feet). The trailhead is conveniently located near the well-known Snoqualmie Pass, making it accessible for both locals and visitors.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If you're driving, head towards Snoqualmie Pass via I-90 and take Exit 52. From there, follow signs to the Alpental Ski Area, where you can find parking. For those using public transport, King County Metro and Sound Transit offer services to North Bend, from where you can catch a local shuttle or taxi to the trailhead.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool will ensure you stay on track.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through a lush forest of Douglas fir and western hemlock. After about 1 km (0.6 miles), you'll encounter the first significant climb, gaining approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation. This section can be steep and rocky, so sturdy hiking boots are advisable.
At around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark, you'll reach a scenic overlook offering panoramic views of the surrounding Cascade Mountains. This is a great spot for a short break and some photos. Continuing on, the trail zigzags through a series of switchbacks, which can be quite strenuous but are well worth the effort for the views they provide.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. Keep an eye out for native wildlife such as black-tailed deer, marmots, and various bird species including the Steller's jay and the northern flicker. The flora is equally impressive, with seasonal wildflowers like lupines and Indian paintbrush adding splashes of color to the landscape.
This region has a rich history, once being a vital corridor for Native American tribes and later for early settlers and miners. The trail itself follows parts of old logging routes, and you may notice remnants of this history in the form of old logging equipment and cabins.
As you approach the final 1 km (0.6 miles) of the loop, the trail descends gradually back into the forest, offering a peaceful end to your hike. The descent is less strenuous but can be slippery, especially after rain, so take care.
This trail offers a rewarding mix of natural beauty, physical challenge, and historical intrigue, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
