“Embark on a breathtaking 17-km journey through lush forests and alpine lakes in Washington's Alpine Lakes Wilderness.”
Starting your adventure near King County, Washington, the Deer Lake and Bear Lake via Lake Dorothy Trail offers a captivating journey through the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. This out-and-back trail spans approximately 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) with an elevation gain of around 800 meters (2,625 feet), making it a moderately challenging hike suitable for those with some experience.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the Lake Dorothy Trailhead, located near the town of Skykomish. The nearest significant landmark is the Skykomish Ranger Station, which is a good reference point. For those using public transport, you can take a bus to Skykomish and then arrange for a taxi or rideshare to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through a lush forest of towering Douglas firs and western hemlocks. The first 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) are relatively easy, with a gradual elevation gain of about 150 meters (492 feet). This section is well-maintained and offers a serene introduction to the hike.
At approximately 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles), you'll reach Lake Dorothy, a stunning alpine lake surrounded by dense forest and rugged peaks. This is a great spot to take a break, enjoy the scenery, and perhaps even spot some local wildlife such as deer or various bird species. The elevation gain to this point is around 200 meters (656 feet).
Continuing on, the trail becomes steeper as you make your way towards Deer Lake. This section is more challenging, with rocky terrain and several switchbacks. After about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from Lake Dorothy, you'll arrive at Deer Lake, having gained an additional 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation. The lake is smaller but equally picturesque, offering a peaceful setting for a rest.
The final stretch to Bear Lake is the most demanding part of the hike. The trail narrows and becomes more rugged, requiring careful navigation. Using HiiKER can be particularly helpful here to ensure you stay on the correct path. After another 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) and an elevation gain of 300 meters (984 feet), you'll reach Bear Lake. Nestled in a high alpine basin, Bear Lake is a pristine body of water surrounded by rocky outcrops and alpine meadows.
The Alpine Lakes Wilderness has a rich history, having been designated as a protected area in 1976. The region was historically used by Native American tribes for hunting and gathering. The diverse ecosystem and the pristine nature of the lakes have made it a significant area for conservation efforts.
Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a variety of flora and fauna. The lower sections of the trail are dominated by old-growth forests, while higher elevations feature alpine meadows filled with wildflowers during the summer months. Wildlife sightings may include black bears, mountain goats, and a variety of bird species.
Given the moderate difficulty of the trail, it's essential to come prepared. Wear sturdy hiking boots, bring plenty of water, and pack layers as the weather can change rapidly in the mountains. A map and compass or a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER are crucial for staying on track, especially in the more challenging sections.
This hike offers a rewarding experience with its stunning lakes, diverse ecosystems, and historical significance, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
