Starting your adventure near King County, Washington, the Blue Goose and Tahomie Gnomie Loop offers a delightful 2 km (1.24 miles) journey with no significant elevation gain, making it accessible for a wide range of hikers. This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, primarily due to some uneven terrain and occasional muddy patches, especially after rain.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the nearest known landmark, the Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park. From there, follow the signs to the trailhead parking area. For those using public transport, take the King County Metro bus to the Issaquah Transit Center, and then a short taxi or rideshare will get you to the trailhead.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool ensures you stay on track.
The loop begins with a gentle walk through a lush forest, dominated by towering Douglas firs and Western red cedars. The forest floor is carpeted with ferns and moss, creating a serene and almost magical atmosphere. About 0.5 km (0.31 miles) in, you'll come across a small, picturesque creek. This is a great spot to take a short break and enjoy the sounds of flowing water.
As you continue, keep an eye out for the Blue Goose Rock, a large boulder covered in vibrant blue-green lichen, located approximately 1 km (0.62 miles) from the start. This natural landmark is a popular photo spot and a good place to pause and appreciate the unique flora.
Further along, around the 1.5 km (0.93 miles) mark, you'll encounter the Tahomie Gnomie Garden. This whimsical area features small, gnome-like statues hidden among the trees and shrubs. It's a delightful surprise that adds a touch of enchantment to your hike.
The trail is home to a variety of wildlife. You might spot black-tailed deer, raccoons, and a plethora of bird species, including the Pacific wren and the Steller's jay. The area is also known for its seasonal wildflowers, such as trilliums and bleeding hearts, which bloom in the spring.
The region has a rich history, once inhabited by the Coast Salish people. The forest trails were used for hunting and gathering, and remnants of their presence can still be felt in the ancient trees and natural formations. The area later became a part of the logging industry in the early 20th century, and you might notice old logging roads and stumps as you hike.
The last stretch of the loop brings you back through a dense forest canopy, eventually leading you to the trailhead. The entire loop takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the sights.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and a touch of whimsy, making it a memorable hike for anyone looking to explore the wonders of King County's forests.
