These hummocks create a unique, undulating terrain that is both fascinating and challenging.

At approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you will encounter a series of small ponds and wetlands. These water bodies are home to a variety of wildlife, including amphibians like frogs and newts, as well as numerous bird species. Keep an eye out for red-winged blackbirds and great blue herons.

Historical Significance

As you hike, you'll notice the stark contrast between the barren hummocks and the slowly recovering vegetation. Interpretive signs along the trail provide insights into the geological and ecological impacts of the eruption, making this hike not only a physical journey but an educational one as well.

Navigation and Safety

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, offering detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on course. The trail can be muddy in places, especially after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.

Wildlife and Flora

As you continue along the loop, you'll traverse through areas of young alder and willow trees, which have colonized the disturbed landscape. In the spring and summer, wildflowers such as lupine and Indian paintbrush add vibrant splashes of color to the scenery. Deer and elk are also common in this area, so keep your camera ready for potential wildlife sightings.
