To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the town of Entiat, Washington. The trail begins at the Mad River Trailhead, located near the confluence of the Mad River and the Entiat River. The initial section of the trail is relatively gentle, winding through lush forests of Douglas fir and ponderosa pine. As you progress, the trail starts to ascend more steeply, offering glimpses of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
At around the 5-kilometer (3-mile) mark, you'll encounter the first significant landmark: the Mad River Falls. This picturesque waterfall is a great spot for a short break and some photos. Continuing on, the trail becomes steeper and more rugged, with switchbacks that lead you higher into the alpine terrain.
Around the 12-kilometer (7.5-mile) point, you'll reach the junction with the Lost Lake Trail. This section is particularly scenic, with panoramic views of the Entiat Mountains and the opportunity to spot wildlife such as black bears, deer, and various bird species. Keep an eye out for the distinctive call of the Clark's nutcracker, a bird commonly found in this region.
The area around the Mad River and Lost Lake trails has a rich history. It was originally inhabited by the Wenatchi people, who used the river and surrounding forests for fishing, hunting, and gathering. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the region saw an influx of settlers and loggers, drawn by the abundant natural resources. Remnants of old logging camps and equipment can still be found along the trail, offering a glimpse into the area's past.
The final stretch to Lost Lake involves a steep climb, but the effort is well worth it. Lost Lake, situated at an elevation of approximately 1,800 meters (5,900 feet), is a pristine alpine lake surrounded by towering peaks. The lake is an ideal spot for a longer rest, a picnic, or even a refreshing swim in the summer months.
