Starting near Chelan County, Washington, the Icicle Ridge Out and Back trail offers a rewarding hike with a distance of around 8 km (5 miles) and an elevation gain of approximately 600 meters (1,968 feet). This trail is classified as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the town of Leavenworth, Washington. From Leavenworth, take Icicle Road (Forest Road 7600) for about 8 miles until you reach the Icicle Ridge Trailhead. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is Leavenworth, which is accessible by bus services from Wenatchee. From Leavenworth, you may need to arrange a taxi or rideshare to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a steady ascent through a dense forest of Douglas fir and ponderosa pine. The initial 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail are relatively steep, gaining about 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation. As you climb, keep an eye out for the diverse flora, including wildflowers like lupine and Indian paintbrush, especially vibrant in late spring and early summer.
Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, the forest begins to thin, offering your first panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and peaks. This is a great spot to take a break and hydrate. The trail continues to ascend, albeit at a gentler gradient, for the next 1 km (0.6 miles), gaining another 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation.
The Icicle Ridge area is home to a variety of wildlife. You might spot mule deer, black bears, and a variety of bird species such as the mountain bluebird and Clark's nutcracker. Always maintain a safe distance from wildlife and follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural environment.
The region around Icicle Ridge has a rich history. The name "Icicle" is derived from the Native American word "na-sik-elt," meaning "narrow canyon." The area was historically inhabited by the Wenatchi tribe, who utilized the land for hunting and gathering. As you hike, you may come across remnants of old logging activities, a testament to the area's past economic activities.
The final stretch of the trail involves a series of switchbacks leading to the ridge. Upon reaching the ridge, at around 4 km (2.5 miles) from the trailhead, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the Enchantment Peaks and the Wenatchee River Valley. This is the turnaround point for the out-and-back hike, making it a perfect spot for a picnic while soaking in the breathtaking scenery.
Given the elevation gain and the sometimes rugged terrain, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. Ensure you have adequate water, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing. The trail can be slippery in wet conditions, so good hiking boots with traction are recommended.
By following these guidelines and being prepared, you'll have a memorable and enjoyable hike on the Icicle Ridge Out and Back trail.
