“The Eightmile Lake Trail offers stunning views, rich history, and moderate challenge, perfect for fit hikers.”
Starting near Chelan County, Washington, the Eightmile Lake Trail is an 11 km (approximately 6.8 miles) out-and-back trail with an elevation gain of around 500 meters (1,640 feet). This trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it accessible for most hikers with a moderate level of fitness.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the Eightmile Campground, located off Icicle Creek Road. The nearest significant landmark is the town of Leavenworth, Washington. From Leavenworth, it's about a 30-minute drive to the trailhead. For those using public transport, you can take a bus to Leavenworth and then arrange for a taxi or rideshare to the trailhead.
The trail begins at the Eightmile Campground, where you’ll find parking and basic amenities. The initial section of the trail is relatively flat and meanders through a dense forest of pine and fir trees. After about 1.5 km (0.9 miles), you’ll start to notice a gradual incline as you approach the first significant landmark, Little Eightmile Lake. This small, serene lake is a great spot for a quick rest and some photos.
As you continue, the trail becomes steeper, gaining most of its 500 meters (1,640 feet) of elevation in the next 3 km (1.9 miles). The terrain here is rocky and can be slippery, especially after rain, so good hiking boots are recommended. Along this section, you’ll encounter several switchbacks that offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. In the lower sections, you’ll find a variety of wildflowers, especially in late spring and early summer. As you ascend, the flora transitions to alpine meadows and sparse tree cover. Keep an eye out for wildlife; deer and marmots are commonly seen, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a black bear from a safe distance.
The region around Eightmile Lake has a rich history. It was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, who used the area for hunting and gathering. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area saw an influx of settlers and miners. Remnants of old mining equipment can still be found off the main trail, offering a glimpse into the past.
After about 5.5 km (3.4 miles) from the trailhead, you’ll arrive at Eightmile Lake. This pristine alpine lake is surrounded by towering peaks and offers crystal-clear waters. It’s an ideal spot for a picnic or a refreshing dip, although the water can be quite cold even in summer. There are several flat areas around the lake where you can set up a day camp or just relax and take in the views.
For navigation, it’s advisable to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can be invaluable, especially if you decide to explore some of the less-traveled paths around the lake.
The return journey follows the same path back to the trailhead. While descending, take your time to enjoy the views and perhaps spot some wildlife you might have missed on the way up. The descent is easier on the legs but still requires caution due to the rocky terrain.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, moderate challenge, and historical intrigue, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
