“Embark on a challenging 18-mile adventure to Cashmere Mountain with stunning views and rich historical significance.”
Starting your adventure near Chelan County, Washington, the trailhead for Cashmere Mountain via Eightmile Lake Trail is accessible by car. From Leavenworth, head south on Icicle Road for about 8 miles (13 km) until you reach the Eightmile Lake Trailhead parking area. Public transport options are limited, so driving is the most reliable way to get there.
The trail begins with a moderate ascent through a dense forest of pine and fir trees. After approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) and an elevation gain of around 1,000 feet (305 meters), you'll reach the serene Eightmile Lake. This is a great spot to take a break, enjoy the views, and perhaps even spot some local wildlife like deer or marmots. The lake is surrounded by rugged cliffs and offers a picturesque setting for photography.
Continuing on, the trail becomes steeper as you make your way towards Little Eightmile Lake, which is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) further along and involves an additional 800 feet (244 meters) of elevation gain. The path here is rocky and can be challenging, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Little Eightmile Lake is smaller but equally beautiful, often less crowded, and provides a more secluded atmosphere.
From Little Eightmile Lake, the trail becomes more strenuous. You'll ascend another 2,000 feet (610 meters) over the next 3 miles (4.8 km) to reach the summit of Cashmere Mountain. This section is characterized by switchbacks and loose gravel, requiring careful footing. The alpine environment here is stunning, with wildflowers in bloom during the summer months and panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.
Upon reaching the summit of Cashmere Mountain, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the North Cascades, including Mount Stuart and the Enchantments. The summit is a perfect place to rest, have lunch, and take in the expansive scenery before beginning your descent.
The area around Cashmere Mountain has a rich history, with Native American tribes such as the Yakama and Wenatchi historically using these lands for hunting and gathering. The name "Cashmere" itself is derived from the region of Kashmir in India, reflecting the early settlers' admiration for the area's beauty.
Throughout the hike, keep an eye out for diverse wildlife, including black bears, mountain goats, and various bird species. The flora ranges from dense forest at lower elevations to alpine meadows filled with wildflowers as you climb higher.
