This medium-difficulty trail is perfect for those looking to explore the stunning landscapes of Capitol Reef National Park.

Getting There

To reach the trailhead, drive to the Capitol Reef National Park Visitor Center, located on Utah State Route 24. If you're using public transport, the nearest major city is Salt Lake City, from where you can take a bus to Torrey, Utah, and then a taxi or shuttle service to the park.

Trail Overview

The trail begins with a steep ascent, gaining about 150 meters (492 feet) in the first 1.5 km (0.9 miles). This initial climb can be challenging, but it rewards hikers with breathtaking views of the surrounding canyon and rock formations. As you ascend, keep an eye out for the unique Navajo Sandstone cliffs that characterize this region.

Historical Significance

Cohab Canyon holds historical significance as it was once used by early Mormon settlers. The name "Cohab" is derived from "cohabitation," referring to the polygamist communities that sought refuge in the secluded canyons of Capitol Reef. As you hike, imagine the lives of these settlers and the rugged terrain they navigated.

Key Landmarks and Wildlife

At around 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the junction for the Fruita Overlook Trail. Take a moment to enjoy the panoramic views of the Fruita Historic District, a lush valley that contrasts sharply with the arid surroundings. This area is known for its historic orchards, which were planted by early settlers and are still maintained today.

Continuing on the loop, you'll traverse through Cohab Canyon, where the trail levels out and becomes less strenuous. The canyon walls here are adorned with vibrant hues of red, orange, and pink, making it a photographer's paradise. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep an eye out for mule deer, rock squirrels, and a variety of bird species, including the striking peregrine falcon.

Navigation and Safety

Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can provide extra assurance, especially in the more secluded sections of the canyon.

Final Stretch

As you near the end of the loop, the trail descends gradually back towards the trailhead. This section offers a more relaxed pace, allowing you to soak in the final views of the canyon and reflect on the diverse landscapes you've traversed.

Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a curious explorer, the Cohab Canyon Trail and Fruita Overlook Trail provide a rich tapestry of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and wildlife encounters that make for an unforgettable hiking experience.
