“This 18-kilometer trail through Utah's scenic forests and meadows offers breathtaking views and rich history.”
Starting near Utah County, Utah, the Timpooneke-Chris' Flat Trail and Grove Creek Trail is a point-to-point hike that spans approximately 18 kilometers (11 miles) with an elevation gain of around 600 meters (1,970 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a diverse range of experiences, from lush forests to expansive meadows, and is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the region.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the Timpooneke Campground, located off the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway (SR-92). For those using public transport, the nearest major city is Provo, Utah. From Provo, you can take a bus to the American Fork Canyon area and then a taxi or rideshare service to the Timpooneke Campground.
The trail begins at the Timpooneke Campground, a popular starting point for many hikes in the area. As you set off, you'll find yourself surrounded by dense forests of aspen and pine. The initial section of the trail is relatively gentle, allowing you to ease into the hike. After about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles), you'll start to notice a gradual increase in elevation.
One of the first significant landmarks you'll encounter is Scout Falls, located approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the trailhead. This picturesque waterfall is a great spot for a short break and some photos. Continuing on, you'll reach Chris' Flat, a beautiful meadow that offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. This area is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) into the hike and is an excellent place for a picnic.
As you traverse the trail, keep an eye out for local wildlife. Deer, elk, and various bird species are commonly seen in this area. The trail also passes through several wildflower meadows, which are particularly vibrant in late spring and early summer.
The region has a rich history, with Native American tribes such as the Ute and Shoshone having inhabited the area for centuries. The trail itself has been used for various purposes over the years, including as a route for early settlers and miners.
Given the trail's length and elevation gain, it's essential to be well-prepared. Make sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to keep you on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can provide extra peace of mind.
As you approach the final section of the trail, you'll descend into the Grove Creek area. This part of the hike offers a mix of forested paths and open areas with panoramic views. The trail concludes near the Grove Creek Trailhead, where you can arrange for a pickup or find parking if you've left a car there.
This hike offers a well-rounded experience, combining natural beauty, wildlife, and a touch of history, making it a must-do for any avid hiker.
Days planned around your pace, with somewhere to stay each night.
