“Experience Utah's natural beauty and rich history on the challenging yet rewarding Box Elder and White Canyon Trail.”
Starting near Utah County, Utah, the Box Elder Trail and White Canyon Trail offer a challenging yet rewarding hiking experience. This out-and-back trail spans approximately 15 km (9.3 miles) with an elevation gain of around 1600 meters (5,249 feet), making it a medium difficulty hike suitable for those with a good level of fitness.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the Box Elder Peak Trailhead, located near the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the Timpanogos Cave National Monument Visitor Center. From there, you may need to arrange a taxi or rideshare service to the trailhead, as public transport options are limited in this remote area.
The trail begins with a steady ascent through dense forest, primarily composed of aspen and pine trees. Early on, you'll encounter a series of switchbacks that help to manage the steep elevation gain. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the forest opens up, offering your first panoramic views of the surrounding Wasatch Range.
Given the elevation gain and the remote nature of the trail, it's crucial to be well-prepared. Download the trail map from HiiKER before you set out, as cell service can be unreliable. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool will ensure you stay on track.
The region around Box Elder Peak and White Canyon has a rich history. Native American tribes, including the Ute and Shoshone, originally inhabited the area. The trail itself follows some of the ancient paths used by these tribes for hunting and trading. Additionally, the nearby Timpanogos Cave National Monument offers a glimpse into the geological history of the region, with its stunning cave formations and rich fossil record.
As you approach the end of the trail, the path becomes steeper and rockier. The final push to the turnaround point is challenging but offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Once you reach the end, take a moment to soak in the scenery before retracing your steps back to the trailhead.
This hike is a fantastic way to experience the natural beauty and historical richness of Utah's Wasatch Range. Make sure to pack plenty of water, snacks, and appropriate gear for changing weather conditions.
