“Embark on a captivating 31-km journey through the Uinta Mountains' scenic meadows, forests, and wildlife.”
Starting near Summit County, Utah, the Little East Fork Blacks Fork Trail offers a captivating journey through the Uinta Mountains. This out-and-back trail spans approximately 31 kilometers (19.3 miles) with an elevation gain of around 800 meters (2,625 feet), making it a moderately challenging hike suitable for those with some experience.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the town of Kamas, Utah, and follow the Mirror Lake Highway (UT-150) until you reach the turnoff for the East Fork Blacks Fork Road. Continue on this road until you reach the trailhead parking area. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is Kamas, where you can arrange for a local shuttle or taxi service to take you to the trailhead.
The trail begins at an elevation of approximately 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) and gradually ascends through dense forests of pine and aspen. Early on, you'll cross several small streams, so waterproof boots are recommended. The first 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) are relatively gentle, with an elevation gain of about 150 meters (492 feet).
As you progress, the trail opens up to expansive meadows filled with wildflowers during the summer months. Around the 8-kilometer (5-mile) mark, you'll encounter a series of switchbacks that lead you up a steeper section, gaining approximately 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation over the next 3 kilometers (1.9 miles). This part of the trail offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
The Uinta Mountains are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and the occasional black bear. Birdwatchers will also find plenty to admire, with species such as the mountain bluebird and Clark's nutcracker frequently spotted. The flora is equally diverse, with groves of quaking aspen and stands of lodgepole pine providing a picturesque backdrop.
The Uinta Mountains have a rich history, with evidence of Native American habitation dating back thousands of years. The area was also explored by early trappers and settlers in the 19th century. Keep an eye out for old cabins and remnants of mining operations, which offer a glimpse into the region's past.
Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's essential to be well-prepared. Download the trail map from HiiKER for offline use, as cell service can be unreliable. Carry sufficient water, snacks, and a first-aid kit. Weather in the Uinta Mountains can change rapidly, so pack layers and be prepared for sudden rain or temperature drops.
The final section of the trail takes you through a series of alpine meadows before reaching the turnaround point near the headwaters of the Little East Fork Blacks Fork. This area is an excellent spot for a rest and a picnic, with panoramic views that make the effort worthwhile. The return journey follows the same path, allowing you to enjoy the scenery from a different perspective.
