“Explore the scenic 34-km Dead Horse Lake Trail with stunning views and historical intrigue for moderate hikers.”
Starting near Summit County, Utah, the Dead Horse Lake via Uinta Highline Trail is an out-and-back trail that spans approximately 34 kilometers (21 miles) with an elevation gain of around 500 meters (1,640 feet). This trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the Mirror Lake Highway (UT-150) from Kamas, Utah. The trailhead is located near the Highline Trailhead parking area, which is well-marked and easily accessible. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is Kamas, Utah. From there, you may need to arrange a taxi or rideshare to the trailhead, as public transport options are limited in this remote area.
The trail begins at the Highline Trailhead, situated at an elevation of approximately 3,048 meters (10,000 feet). The initial section of the trail is relatively flat, allowing hikers to acclimate to the altitude. As you progress, the trail gradually ascends, offering stunning views of the Uinta Mountains.
Around 5 kilometers (3 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter the first significant landmark, the picturesque Hayden Pass. This area provides panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, making it an excellent spot for a short break and some photography.
Continuing along the trail, you'll traverse through lush meadows and dense forests, home to a variety of wildlife including deer, elk, and occasionally black bears. Keep an eye out for marmots and pika, especially in the rocky areas.
At approximately 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) from the trailhead, you'll reach Dead Horse Lake. Nestled at an elevation of around 3,353 meters (11,000 feet), this alpine lake is surrounded by rugged cliffs and offers a serene setting for camping or a long rest. The lake is named after a tragic event in the late 1800s when a group of horses perished in the area due to harsh weather conditions.
The Uinta Highline Trail, part of which you’ll be hiking, has historical significance as it was used by Native American tribes for hunting and trading long before European settlers arrived. The trail also played a role during the westward expansion of the United States, serving as a route for explorers and trappers.
Given the remote nature of this trail, it's crucial to be well-prepared. Ensure you have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to keep track of your progress and location. Weather in the Uinta Mountains can be unpredictable, so pack accordingly with layers, rain gear, and sufficient food and water. Always inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time.
The return journey follows the same path back to the Highline Trailhead. While descending, take the opportunity to enjoy the changing perspectives and perhaps spot any wildlife you may have missed on the way up.
This trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and a moderate challenge, making it a rewarding experience for those who undertake it.
