To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If you're driving, head towards the nearest significant landmark, which is the town of Bluff, Utah. From Bluff, take US-191 N for about 10 miles until you reach the turnoff for the trailhead. Public transport options are limited, so it's advisable to rent a car if you're not already driving.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through a landscape dotted with juniper and piñon pine trees. As you progress, the path becomes steeper, offering increasingly stunning views of the surrounding canyons and mesas. The first 0.5 kilometers (0.31 miles) are relatively easy, with a gradual incline that allows you to acclimate to the terrain.
At approximately 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter a striking rock formation known as the "Sentinel." This natural landmark serves as a great spot for a short break and some photos. The Sentinel is a towering sandstone pillar that has been shaped by centuries of wind and water erosion.
The trail is home to a variety of plant and animal life. Keep an eye out for desert wildflowers in the spring, including Indian paintbrush and desert marigold. Wildlife sightings may include mule deer, jackrabbits, and a variety of bird species such as red-tailed hawks and canyon wrens.
The region around Pyramid Canyon has a rich history. It was once inhabited by the Ancestral Puebloans, and you may notice remnants of their presence in the form of petroglyphs and pottery shards. These artifacts offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who once called this rugged landscape home.
The final stretch of the trail involves a steeper climb, gaining about 50 meters (164 feet) in elevation over the last 0.5 kilometers (0.31 miles). This section can be challenging, so take your time and use trekking poles if you have them. The effort is well worth it, as you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of Pyramid Canyon from the overlook.
