The initial section of the trail is relatively gentle, winding through a lush forest of aspen and pine trees. As you progress, the trail becomes steeper and rockier, requiring careful footing. The elevation gain is gradual but consistent, so be prepared for a steady climb.
At approximately 1 km (0.62 miles) into the hike, you will encounter a small, picturesque waterfall. This is a great spot to take a short break and enjoy the serene surroundings. Continuing on, the trail narrows and becomes more rugged, leading you through a series of switchbacks.
The area is rich in flora and fauna. You may spot mule deer, various bird species, and even the occasional moose. The trail is particularly beautiful in the fall when the leaves change color, offering a vibrant display of reds, oranges, and yellows.
Big Cottonwood Canyon has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when it was a significant mining area. Remnants of old mining operations can still be found in the region, adding a historical layer to your hike.
As you approach the 3 km (1.86 miles) mark, the trail culminates in a stunning viewpoint overlooking the canyon. This is the perfect spot to rest, take photos, and soak in the panoramic views before heading back the way you came.
