To reach the trailhead, head towards the Brighton Ski Resort area. If you're driving, you can park at the Brighton Resort parking lot. For those using public transport, take the UTA Ski Bus Route 972, which operates during the ski season and drops you off near the Brighton Resort. From there, it's a short walk to the trailhead.
The trail begins at the Silver Lake Visitor Center, a great spot to gather information and use the restroom before setting off. The initial part of the trail is a well-maintained boardwalk that circles Silver Lake. This section is relatively flat and accessible, making it ideal for families and those looking for a leisurely stroll.
As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by the serene waters of Silver Lake. This area is rich in wildlife, so keep an eye out for ducks, beavers, and even moose. The lake is surrounded by lush vegetation, including willows and aspens, which provide a beautiful backdrop, especially in the fall when the leaves change color.
After completing the loop around Silver Lake, you'll transition onto the Lake Solitude Trail. This is where the elevation gain begins. The trail becomes more rugged and climbs steadily through a forested area. The path is well-marked, but it's advisable to use the HiiKER app for navigation to ensure you stay on track.
As you ascend, you'll pass through dense forests of pine and fir. The trail can be rocky in sections, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. About halfway up, you'll come across a small clearing that offers a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains. This is a great spot to take a break and hydrate.
Approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.55 miles) from the start, you'll reach Lake Solitude. This alpine lake is a tranquil spot, perfect for a picnic or simply to rest and take in the scenery. The lake is surrounded by towering peaks and dense forest, creating a secluded and peaceful atmosphere.
The area around Silver Lake and Lake Solitude has a rich history. It was originally inhabited by the Ute Native American tribe, who used the land for hunting and gathering.
