“Explore the stunning Cecret Lake Trail for a moderate hike with wildflowers, wildlife, and historical intrigue.”
Starting your adventure near Salt Lake County, Utah, the Cecret Lake Trail and Upper Albion Meadows Trail offer a delightful 7 km (4.3 miles) out-and-back journey with an elevation gain of approximately 400 meters (1,312 feet). This medium-difficulty trail is perfect for those looking to experience the beauty of the Wasatch Mountains.
To reach the trailhead, head towards the Alta Ski Area. If you're driving, you can park at the Albion Base Area parking lot. For those using public transport, take the UTA Ski Bus Route 994 from Salt Lake City to the Alta Ski Area during the ski season. Outside of ski season, you may need to arrange a ride or use a rideshare service to get to the trailhead.
The trail begins at the Albion Base Area, where you'll find the trailhead near the Albion Basin Campground. The initial section of the trail takes you through the Upper Albion Meadows, a stunning area filled with wildflowers during the summer months. This section is relatively flat and easy, making it a great warm-up for the more challenging parts ahead.
As you hike through the meadows, keep an eye out for a variety of wildflowers, including Indian paintbrush, lupine, and columbine. The area is also home to a diverse range of wildlife. You might spot mule deer, marmots, and even the occasional moose. Birdwatchers will enjoy sightings of various species, including the Clark's nutcracker and the mountain bluebird.
After about 2 km (1.2 miles) of meandering through the meadows, the trail begins to ascend more steeply. The next 3 km (1.9 miles) will take you through a series of switchbacks, gaining approximately 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation. The terrain here is rocky, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Trekking poles can also be helpful for stability.
At around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll reach Cecret Lake, a pristine alpine lake nestled in a cirque surrounded by towering peaks. The lake is a popular spot for photography, so don't forget your camera. The clear waters reflect the surrounding mountains, creating a picturesque scene that's worth the effort.
The area around Cecret Lake has a rich mining history. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Albion Basin was a bustling mining area. Remnants of old mining equipment and structures can still be seen along the trail, offering a glimpse into the region's past.
After enjoying the serene beauty of Cecret Lake, retrace your steps back to the trailhead. The descent is much easier, allowing you to take in any sights you might have missed on the way up.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on the right path.
