Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the vicinity of Moab, Utah. The nearest significant landmark is the Moab Giants Dinosaur Park. From there, follow the signs towards the trailhead, which is located off the Dalton Wells Road. For those using public transport, the nearest bus stop is in Moab, from where you can take a taxi or rideshare service to the trailhead.

Trail Description

The trail begins with a gentle ascent, offering panoramic views of the surrounding red rock formations. As you progress, you'll encounter a mix of slickrock and sandy paths. The first significant landmark is the Sovereign Singletrack, approximately 3 km (1.8 miles) into the hike. This section is known for its winding paths and offers a great opportunity for mountain biking as well.

The trail is rich in desert flora, including juniper trees, sagebrush, and various cacti species. Wildlife sightings are common, with lizards, jackrabbits, and occasionally, desert bighorn sheep making appearances. Birdwatchers will also enjoy spotting species like the golden eagle and peregrine falcon.

The region holds historical significance, with ancient petroglyphs etched into the rocks by Native American tribes. These can be found around the 7 km (4.3 miles) mark. The area was also a significant route for early settlers and explorers, adding a layer of historical depth to your hike.

Midpoint and Elevation

Around the midpoint of the trail, at approximately 8.5 km (5.3 miles), you'll reach the highest elevation point. Here, the elevation gain is about 150 meters (492 feet) from the start. This spot offers breathtaking views of the La Sal Mountains and the expansive desert landscape.

Descending and Loop Completion

The descent begins gradually, with the trail winding through narrow canyons and open desert plains. The final 5 km (3.1 miles) of the trail are relatively flat, making for a comfortable end to your hike. You'll loop back to the starting point, completing the 17 km (10.5 miles) journey.
