Starting near Emery County, Utah, the Lizard Foot, Desert View, and Dark Side of the Moon Loop is a captivating 7 km (approximately 4.3 miles) trail with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This loop trail offers a medium difficulty rating, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
#### Desert View Section As you transition into the Desert View section, the trail starts to ascend gradually. This part offers panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape, including distant mesas and buttes. The elevation gain here is about 50 meters (164 feet) over 2 km (1.2 miles). This section is a great spot for photography, especially during sunrise or sunset when the desert colors are most vibrant.
#### Dark Side of the Moon Section The final section, Dark Side of the Moon, is the most challenging part of the loop. The trail here is rockier and requires careful navigation. Using HiiKER can be particularly helpful in this section to stay on track. The terrain is rugged, and the elevation gain is another 50 meters (164 feet) over the remaining 3 km (1.9 miles). This area is known for its unique geological formations, including dark basalt rocks that give this section its name.
