Crack Canyon Walk

The Crack Canyon Walk is an 8 km (5 miles) out-and-back trail located near Emery County, Utah, with an elevation gain of approximately 700 meters (2,300 feet). This trail offers a moderately challenging hike through a stunning slot canyon, making it a perfect adventure for those looking to explore the unique geological formations of the San Rafael Swell.

Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can drive to the nearest significant landmark, Goblin Valley State Park. From there, head south on Temple Mountain Road for about 12 miles (19 km) until you reach the trailhead parking area. Public transport options are limited in this remote area, so driving is the most practical way to get there. Ensure your vehicle is suitable for rough, unpaved roads, as the last stretch can be quite rugged.

Trail Overview

The trail begins with a gentle descent into the canyon, where you'll immediately notice the towering sandstone walls that characterize this region. The first 1.5 km (1 mile) of the trail is relatively flat, making it an excellent warm-up for the more strenuous sections ahead. As you progress, the canyon narrows, and you'll encounter a series of small obstacles, including boulders and dry falls, which require some scrambling.

Key Landmarks and Features

Slot Canyon

Around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark, the canyon narrows significantly, transforming into a classic slot canyon. The walls here can reach up to 30 meters (100 feet) high, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring atmosphere. This section is particularly photogenic, so have your camera ready.

Geological Formations

As you continue, keep an eye out for unique geological formations such as the "Crack" itself, a narrow fissure in the canyon wall that gives the trail its name. This feature is located approximately 3 km (1.8 miles) from the trailhead. The rock layers here are a testament to millions of years of geological activity, offering a fascinating glimpse into the Earth's history.

Flora and Fauna

The San Rafael Swell is home to a variety of plant and animal species. You might spot desert flora such as sagebrush, juniper, and various cacti. Wildlife sightings can include lizards, snakes, and occasionally, desert bighorn sheep. Birdwatchers will also enjoy the opportunity to see species like the canyon wren and the peregrine falcon.

Historical Significance

The San Rafael Swell has a rich history, with evidence of human habitation dating back thousands of years. Native American petroglyphs and pictographs can be found in the region, though not directly on this trail. The area was also a significant route for early explorers and settlers, adding a layer of historical intrigue to your hike.

Navigation and Safety

Given the remote nature of Crack Canyon, it's crucial to be well-prepared. Download the trail map from HiiKER before you set out, as cell service can be unreliable. Carry plenty of water, especially during the hotter months, and be prepared for sudden weather changes. The narrow sections of the canyon can be prone to flash flooding, so always check the weather forecast and avoid hiking during or after heavy rains.

This trail offers a unique and rewarding experience for those willing to tackle its challenges. With its stunning geological features, rich history, and diverse wildlife, the Crack Canyon Walk is a must-visit for any avid hiker.
