ROUTE OVERVIEW The Llangollen Round is a substantial 52km endurance loop that circumnavigates the historic town of Llangollen. Starting and finishing at the World Heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in Trevor, the route links every major summit surrounding the Dee Valley. It combines high mountain scenery with industrial heritage, crossing the limestone escarpments of the Eglwyseg Valley and the open moors of the Berwynion foothills.
THE TERRAIN A varied mix of high moorland, deep heather, grassy ridges, and well-established tracks. The route ascends approximately 2000m, taking in the dramatic limestone tiers of Trevor Rocks, the Horseshoe Pass, and the route's high point at Moel Fferna (630m). While not technically difficult, the terrain is relentless and changes constantly throughout the loop.
CHALLENGE RATING Ultra / Endurance. This is a severe test of fitness, covering over 32 miles with significant cumulative ascent. It is designed as a sub-12-hour challenge. Walkers need excellent stamina and the ability to maintain a steady pace over mixed terrain for a full day.
NOTE This is a logistics-heavy route due to its length. On Mountain Craft guided events, we provide vehicle support with checkpoints for water and kit transfers to keep pack weight down. Check our profile for our annual "Season Opener" event dates.
