ROUTE OVERVIEW The Glyderau range is defined by its dramatic "moonscapes and monoliths." This classic circular route from Cwm Idwal summits three of the 3000ft giants: Y Garn (946m), Glyder Fawr (1001m), and Glyder Fach. It is the perfect choice for those looking to move beyond Snowdon and experience a more rugged, craggy mountain environment.
THE TERRAIN Geologically unique and visually striking. The route ascends the northeast ridge of Y Garn for incredible valley views before tackling the steep, rocky slopes of Glyder Fawr. The highlight is the traverse of the high plateau—a weird and wonderful landscape of splintered rock shards (Castell y Gwynt) and the famous balanced slab of the Cantilever Stone.
CHALLENGE RATING Hard / Rugged. While it does not require ropes or technical scrambling skills, this is a significant step up from standard hill walking. The terrain is consistently uneven, rocky, and steep, involving 1000m of ascent over 12km. It offers a "hands-on" mountain feel that requires good footwork.
NOTE The Glyderau plateau can be notoriously difficult to navigate in mist due to the lack of distinct paths on the rock. Mountain Craft runs this as a fully guided small group day, offering professional insights into the glacial history and geology of the Ogwen Valley. Check our profile for event dates.
