ROUTE OVERVIEW Crib yr Aran (The Aran Ridge) is one of the finest, yet least frequented, high mountain journeys in Wales. Rising dramatically from the shores of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake), this route tackles the formidable ridgeline to reach Aran Fawddwy (905m), the highest summit in Eryri south of the Snowdon massif. This file covers the full 17km high-level traverse of the ridge followed by a returning loop in the eastern shadow of the mountain, offering a true sense of scale and isolation away from the busy northern peaks.
THE TERRAIN A classic transition from valley farmland and moorland into a rugged, high-mountain environment. The route follows the spectacular "Dragon's Back," a sweeping ridgeline characterised by unique rock formations and sheer eastern cliffs with 200m drops into the glacial valleys below. Expect vast, 360-degree panoramas of mid-Wales and the central peaks on a clear day.
CHALLENGE RATING Physically demanding. This is a big day out involving nearly 1000m of ascent over significant distance (17km+). While not a technical scramble, the terrain includes steep rocky steps and high-level plateaus that require good fitness and the ability to move efficiently over rough ground.
NOTE The Arans are known for their exposure to the elements; the ridge offers little shelter in poor weather. Mountain Craft runs this as a fully guided small group day, providing expert coaching on mountain movement and local landscape education. Check our profile for event dates.
