The Cradle Mountain Huts Walk follows the classic north-to-south line through Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. The usual start is at Ronny Creek near Cradle Mountain, and the walk finishes at the southern end around Narcissus Hut or continues to the Lake St Clair visitor area at Cynthia Bay.
The Cradle Mountain Huts Walk is rated Extra Difficult, which reflects its 77.61 km length, sustained multi-day effort, and 1,471 m of climbing. It follows the same rugged alpine region as the Overland Track, where conditions can include exposed boardwalk, rocky sections, mud, steep climbs, and rapidly changing mountain weather.
The main walking season for the Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair route is the warmer period from October through May, when the Overland Track booking season operates and north-to-south walking rules apply. Summer and early autumn usually bring the longest daylight, but Cradle Mountain can still see cold, wet, and windy conditions at any time.
Dogs are not allowed on the Cradle Mountain Huts Walk because it passes through Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, where domestic animals are prohibited. That rule is in place to protect wildlife and the World Heritage environment across the park.
For the main Overland Track season, walkers are generally required to travel north to south, starting from the Cradle Mountain end after checking in at the visitor center. Outside the regulated season, direction rules can differ, but the standard line for this walk is still from Ronny Creek toward Lake St Clair.
