“Meandering through wildflower meadows, tranquil lakes, and historic villages, this trail offers archipelago magic.”
Getting There To reach the starting point of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail on Runmarö, most hikers begin their journey in Stockholm city. From central Stockholm, take the Waxholmsbolaget ferry from Stavsnäs Vinterhamn to Runmarö, with the ferry terminal easily accessible by bus from Slussen (bus 433 or 434, about 45 minutes). The ferry ride itself is scenic, weaving through the archipelago’s islands before arriving at Runmarö’s main dock, Styrsvik. For those driving, parking is available at Stavsnäs Vinterhamn, but spaces can fill up quickly during summer weekends.
Trail Overview and Terrain Covering approximately 18 km (about 11 miles) with a gentle elevation gain of 100 metres (328 feet), the trail loops around much of Runmarö, one of the larger islands in the Stockholm Archipelago. The route is rated as medium difficulty, primarily due to its length and occasional rocky or root-strewn sections, rather than steep climbs. The path alternates between well-trodden forest tracks, open meadows, and stretches along the island’s rugged coastline. Navigation is straightforward, but carrying the HiiKER app is recommended for up-to-date trail markers and route adjustments.
Natural Highlights and Wildlife Runmarö is renowned for its biodiversity, especially its unique wetlands and over 400 species of wildflowers, including several rare orchids. Early summer is the best time to see these in bloom. The trail passes through lush pine and spruce forests, with occasional clearings offering panoramic views of the Baltic Sea. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for sea eagles, ospreys, and a variety of coastal waders. The island’s freshwater lakes, such as Långsjön and Västersjön, are home to frogs and dragonflies, and the occasional roe deer may be spotted darting through the undergrowth.
Key Landmarks and Points of Interest Styrsvik Village and Historical Sites Starting near Styrsvik, the island’s main settlement, hikers can explore traditional red-painted cottages and the historic Runmarö Chapel, dating back to the 17th century. The chapel is a peaceful spot to pause and learn about the island’s maritime history and its role as a refuge for fishermen and pilots navigating the archipelago’s tricky waters.
Långsjön Lake and Wetlands About 5 km (3 miles) into the hike, the trail skirts the edge of Långsjön, a serene lake surrounded by reeds and birch trees. This area is particularly rich in birdlife and is a good place for a rest or picnic. The wetlands here are protected, so stick to marked paths to avoid disturbing sensitive habitats.
Coastal Views and Swimming Spots Midway through the hike, the trail emerges onto rocky outcrops along the southern coast, with sweeping views across the archipelago. Several small beaches and smooth granite slabs provide excellent swimming opportunities in summer. The water is bracing but clear, and the coastline is dotted with small fishing huts and boat landings.
Sandar and the Eastern Forests The eastern section of the trail passes through Sandar, an area known for its sandy soils and open pine woods. This part of the island is quieter, with fewer visitors, and offers a sense of solitude. Look for ancient cairns and stone walls, remnants of early agricultural activity.
Practical Considerations There are no shops or restaurants along the trail, so bring sufficient water and food for the day. Mobile coverage is generally good, but some forested sections may have patchy reception. Public toilets are available near Styrsvik and at a few popular swimming spots. The trail is well-marked, but weather can change quickly, so pack rain gear and check ferry schedules in advance to avoid missing the last boat back to the mainland.
