“Winding through sunlit shores and storied rocks, Furusund’s trail is a peaceful coastal escape.”
The Furusund section of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail offers a 7.2 km (4.5 miles) hike through serene coastal landscapes, rich in history and natural beauty. With minimal elevation gain, this route is accessible to most hikers and provides a peaceful experience along the shores of the archipelago.
Trail Overview
Starting near the Furusund ferry terminal or Furusunds Värdshus, the trail is best hiked clockwise to fully appreciate its features. While the Stockholm Archipelago Trail (SAT) markings are absent here, the path follows local red trail markers. The majority of the route is easy, though a short segment on the west coast north of the bridge presents some roots and a slight incline, contributing to its medium difficulty rating. The hike typically takes about two hours to complete. ([stockholmarchipelagotrail.com](https://stockholmarchipelagotrail.com/section/section-furusund/?utm_source=openai))
Historical Significance
Furusund boasts a rich maritime history. Notably, in 1463, a fleet anchored here, leading to the carving of a 24-point compass rose into the bedrock—a landmark that remains today. This compass rose, now situated several meters above the guest harbor due to land elevation, is the oldest in the Nordics and uniquely features a royal crown. In the 17th century, Furusund developed a proper harbor and a seaside tavern, becoming a significant maritime hub. The area, once known as Halsö, was prominent until it was burned down during the Russian raids of 1719. By 1734, a building was constructed that served various purposes over the years, including a distillery and customs house, and now houses Furusunds Värdshus. Since the mid-19th century, Furusund has been a popular vacation spot, attracting many prominent figures. Important Considerations
The right of public access in Sweden allows for free movement in nature but comes with responsibilities. Hikers are encouraged to respect the environment by carrying out all trash, using public toilets or ensuring no trace is left behind, and keeping dogs on a leash from March to September. Fire bans should be respected, and fires should not be lit on the rocks to prevent cracking. Embarking on the Furusund section provides a blend of historical exploration and natural beauty, making it a memorable part of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail.
