“Winding through wildflower meadows, coastal forests, and Baltic shores, Arholma’s trail glows with island magic and history.”
Getting There To reach the starting point on Arholma, one of the northernmost islands in the Stockholm Archipelago, take a Waxholmsbolaget ferry from Stockholm’s Strömkajen terminal to Arholma. The journey takes about 2.5 hours, passing through scenic waterways and smaller islands. If arriving by car, drive to Simpnäs on the mainland (about 2 hours from Stockholm), where secure parking is available near the ferry dock. From Simpnäs, a short ferry ride brings you directly to Arholma’s main pier, close to the trailhead.
Trail Overview and Terrain The Stockholm Archipelago Trail on Arholma covers approximately 13 km (8 miles) with a total elevation gain of about 100 metres (330 feet). The route is a loop, beginning and ending near Arholma’s main harbor, close to the historic Arholma Nord guesthouse and the island’s small grocery store. The trail is rated medium difficulty, with mostly gentle ascents and descents, but some rocky and rooty sections typical of Baltic archipelago terrain.
Landmarks and Points of Interest Arholma Nord and the Old Pilot Station Within the first kilometer, you’ll pass the Arholma Nord area, a former military outpost now converted into a guesthouse and café. The old pilot station, perched on a hill, offers panoramic views of the Baltic Sea and is a great spot for a break.
Coastal Forests and Meadows The trail winds through mixed pine and spruce forests interspersed with open meadows. In spring and early summer, wildflowers carpet the ground, and birdlife is abundant—look for white-tailed eagles, oystercatchers, and the occasional seal basking on offshore rocks.
Batteri Arholma At around 5 km (3 miles), you’ll reach Batteri Arholma, a Cold War-era coastal artillery battery. Guided tours are available in summer, and the site’s underground tunnels and gun emplacements are a fascinating reminder of Sweden’s military history.
Beaches and Swimming Spots Several sandy and rocky beaches dot the island’s eastern shore. The beach at Österhamn, about 8 km (5 miles) into the hike, is a popular swimming spot with clear, brackish water and smooth granite slabs perfect for sunbathing.
Arholma Village and Chapel The trail loops back through Arholma village, where you’ll find traditional red wooden houses, a small harbor, and the 18th-century Arholma Chapel. The chapel is open to visitors and features maritime-themed décor reflecting the island’s seafaring heritage.
Navigation and Safety The trail is well-marked with blue and white blazes, but some sections cross exposed bedrock where markings can be sparse. Carry a map and use HiiKER for reliable navigation. Mobile coverage is generally good, but bring a power bank for longer days. Water sources are limited, so carry enough for the full hike, especially in summer.
Wildlife and Nature Arholma’s landscape is shaped by glacial activity, with smooth granite outcrops, mossy boulders, and ancient pine forests. The island is part of the Stockholm Archipelago Nature Reserve, so expect to see a variety of coastal birds, deer, and foxes. In late summer, blueberries and wild raspberries are plentiful along the trail.
Weather and Seasonal Considerations Weather can change quickly in the archipelago. Bring layers, a windproof jacket, and rain gear. Mosquitoes are common in June and July, especially in forested sections. The best hiking conditions are from May to September, when ferries run frequently and most services are open.
Facilities and Accommodation There are no shops or restaurants along the trail itself, but Arholma village has a grocery store, café, and guesthouse. Wild camping is permitted under Sweden’s Right of Public Access, but respect private property and nature reserve rules. Toilets are available at the harbor and near Batteri Arholma.
This trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and classic Swedish island culture, making it a rewarding day hike or overnight adventure.
