Loop
“Winding through wild pines, sandy beaches, and storied fishing villages, Ålö’s trail dazzles the senses.”
Begin your journey on Ålö, one of the southern gems of the Stockholm Archipelago, where the trailhead is conveniently located near the Ålöbrygga ferry pier. This is accessible by taking a Waxholmsbolaget ferry from Nynäshamn, which is easily reached by commuter train from Stockholm Central Station. If arriving by car, parking is available at Nynäshamn’s ferry terminal before boarding the ferry to Ålö.
Trail Overview and Terrain
Covering approximately 13 km (about 8 miles) with a total elevation gain of around 200 metres (650 feet), this loop is rated as difficult due to its rugged coastal terrain, rocky outcrops, and occasional steep ascents and descents. The path weaves through dense pine forests, open meadows, and along dramatic shorelines, offering sweeping views of the Baltic Sea and the surrounding archipelago.
Key Sections and Landmarks
*Ålöbrygga to Storsand Beach (0–3 km / 0–1.8 miles)* From the ferry pier, the trail heads south through a mix of forest and coastal heath, quickly immersing you in the island’s wild character. After about 3 km, you’ll reach Storsand, one of the archipelago’s finest sandy beaches. This is a popular spot for a swim or a picnic, with clear waters and a wide expanse of sand bordered by wind-shaped pines.
*Storsand to Lervik Fishing Village (3–7 km / 1.8–4.3 miles)* Continuing east, the trail skirts rocky headlands and passes through ancient juniper groves. Keep an eye out for sea eagles overhead and seals basking on offshore rocks. At around the 7 km mark, you’ll arrive at Lervik, a small, historic fishing village with classic red boathouses and a tranquil harbor. This area has been inhabited for centuries, and remnants of old fishing gear and stone foundations hint at Ålö’s maritime heritage.
*Lervik to Ålö Gård and Return (7–13 km / 4.3–8 miles)* The path turns north, climbing gently through mixed woodland and open pastures. Ålö Gård, a traditional farmstead, sits at the heart of the island and often has a summer café serving local specialties. The final stretch leads west, with panoramic views across the archipelago, before descending back to Ålöbrygga.
Nature and Wildlife
Ålö is part of the larger Stockholm Archipelago nature reserve, home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. In spring and early summer, the meadows burst with wildflowers, while the forests echo with birdsong. Roe deer, foxes, and a variety of seabirds are commonly seen. The coastline is dotted with smooth granite slabs, perfect for a rest or a quiet moment by the water.
Navigation and Safety
The trail is marked but can be challenging to follow in places, especially where it crosses bare rock or dense undergrowth. Use HiiKER for reliable navigation and to track your progress. Weather can change rapidly, so bring layers and be prepared for wind and rain, especially along exposed coastal sections. Water sources are limited, so carry enough for the day, and note that services are seasonal.
Getting There and Away
Ferries to Ålö operate regularly in summer but less frequently in the off-season; check schedules in advance. The journey from Stockholm to Nynäshamn by train takes about an hour, and the ferry crossing to Ålö adds another hour. Return ferries depart from the same pier, so plan your hike to allow time for the last boat back.
This trail offers a true taste of the Stockholm Archipelago’s wild beauty, blending coastal adventure with cultural history and unforgettable scenery.
