Getting to the Trailhead
The trailhead is located near Flinders Chase National Park on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. The trail begins at the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre, which is a significant landmark and the last place to gather information and supplies before setting off.
Navigating the Trail
Hikers can rely on the HiiKER app for detailed maps and navigation assistance throughout the journey. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital tool can provide additional peace of mind and help with planning each day's hike.
Trail Highlights and Landmarks
The trail is divided into five sections, each offering unique experiences and landscapes:
Rocky River Section - Starting from the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre, hikers will follow the Rocky River towards the coast, encountering a diverse array of wildlife, including kangaroos and wallabies. This section is approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) and leads to the first campsite.
Maupertuis Bay Section - This stretch showcases stunning coastal views and the chance to spot dolphins or whales from the clifftops. The trail meanders for about 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) and includes a descent to the pristine Maupertuis Beach.
Cape du Couedic Section - Hikers will pass by the historic Cape du Couedic Lighthouse, which has been guiding ships since 1909. This 13-kilometer (8-mile) section also features the Remarkable Rocks, a collection of granite boulders sculpted by the elements over millennia.
Sanderson Bay Section - Covering around 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), this part of the trail offers a mix of beach walking and inland forest trails. The serene Hanson Bay is a highlight, with its crystal-clear waters and white sand.
Kelly Hill Section - The final section, about 16 kilometers (10 miles), takes hikers inland through the Kelly Hill Conservation Park, known for its limestone caves and sinkholes. The trail concludes at the Kelly Hill Caves Visitor Centre.
Wildlife and Nature
Kangaroo Island is renowned for its biodiversity. Along the trail, hikers may encounter echidnas, goannas, and a variety of bird species. The island's isolation has also allowed for the evolution of unique subspecies, such as the Kangaroo Island kangaroo and the tammar wallaby.
Historical Significance
The region holds great historical value, with evidence of Aboriginal habitation dating back thousands of years. The lighthouses and remnants of early European settlement tell the story of the island's maritime history and the challenges faced by early navigators.
Preparation and Planning
Hikers should be well-prepared with adequate water, as sources along the trail are limited. Weather on the island can be unpredictable, so layered clothing is recommended. It's also essential to book campsites in advance, as the trail is managed to minimize environmental impact and ensure a quality experience for all visitors.
Access and Transportation
For those without a car, shuttle services are available from Penneshaw and Kingscote to Flinders Chase National Park. It's advisable to arrange these services in advance to coincide with ferry arrivals and departures.
