“A wild, wind-battered Shetland circuit of soaring cliffs, Norse echoes, and raw coastal solitude.”
This is a remote coastal circuit on the far north of Unst in Shetland, linking Norwick, the Hill of Clibberswick, and Harold’s Wick through a mix of rough shore walking, open hillside, minor road, and exposed cliff-top terrain. The overall outing is around 11 km / 6.8 miles, and while the elevation gain is better understood as modest by mountain standards rather than the stated 3,500 metres, the ground can still feel very strenuous because of steep coastal undulations, wet sections, rough footing, and constant exposure to wind. The Hill of Clibberswick itself rises to about 160 m / 525 ft above sea level, with cliffs dropping dramatically to the North Sea nearby. (shetland.gov.uk)
The walk starts near Norwick Beach and Norwick Cemetery, the clearest known landmark for the trailhead area, on the northeast side of Unst. Local route information from Shetland indicates parking near the cemetery by Norwick beach, and the signed access route runs from Norwick toward Clibberswick over the hill. (shetland.gov.uk)
Expect a route where the challenge comes less from altitude and more from isolation, weather, and terrain management. Underfoot, there can be wet grass, uneven coastal ground, rough bypass sections, and steep slopes above serious sea cliffs. In poor visibility or strong winds, this can feel much harder than the distance suggests. An “Extra Difficult” rating makes sense if conditions are bad, if the route includes additional cliff-edge exploration, or if a hiker is not comfortable with exposed, pathless ground. HiiKER is the navigation tool to have loaded before setting out.
From Norwick, the early part of the walk is shaped by the coast: open views, sea air, and a sense of being right at the edge of the northern British Isles. Norwick itself is known for its attractive sandy beach, and the wider area is valued for geology and coastal scenery. The route then climbs onto the Clibberswick headland, where the walking becomes more serious. The ascent to the Hill of Clibberswick is steep in places, and the summit area is close to some of the highest sea cliffs on Unst’s east side, with drops of around 160 m / 525 ft below the trig point area. (shetland.gov.uk)
Views are a major reward here. From the higher ground you can look over Nor Wick, Harold’s Wick, and the surrounding headlands, with a strong sense of exposure to the North Sea. Nearby coastal features include dramatic geos, stacks, and cliff formations, and the landscape is notably bare, rocky, and open. The hill and surrounding ground are associated with serpentinite geology, part of what makes Unst so distinctive. (sobt.co.uk)
The return section typically uses quieter road or easier ground back toward Haroldswick and Norwick, depending on the exact line chosen. Some published versions of the Clibberswick circuit are shorter, around 5.6 km / 3.5 miles one way from Norwick to Clibberswick with roughly 3 km / 1.8 miles of road back, while another commonly described circuit from near Saxa Vord Distillery is about 9 km / 6 miles. Your 11 km figure likely reflects a fuller loop incorporating both Norwick and Harold’s Wick more completely. (shetland.gov.uk)
Harold’s Wick is one of the most historically resonant places on Unst. The bay is traditionally linked to King Harald of Norway, whose fleet is said to have landed here in AD 875, reflecting the deep Norse heritage of Shetland. The settlement remains one of the most northerly in the British Isles. (en.wikipedia.org)
In and around Haroldswick, notable landmarks include the Unst Heritage Centre, Unst Boat Haven, and Haroldswick Methodist Church, described as Britain’s most northerly church. Just to the south and west of the route area is the former RAF Saxa Vord complex, now part of the SaxaVord area, which adds another layer of modern historical interest to the landscape.
