Loop
“A wild Shetland loop of shining sands, sea-carved cliffs, and windswept headland drama.”
This easy coastal loop explores the far south end of West Burra in Shetland, circling the wild headland of Kettla Ness by way of Minn Beach, The Heugg, and Groot Ness. Expect roughly 8 km / 5 miles of walking with about 100 m / 330 ft of ascent, though some published route stats put it a little closer to 7.75 km / 4.75 miles with around 145 m / 476 ft depending on the exact line you take around the headland and any short detours to viewpoints. (walkhighlands.co.uk)
The route begins at the signed Minn Beach car park at the end of the road south of Papil, West Burra, Shetland, ZE2 9UY area, which is the nearest clear landmarked start point for most walkers. The walk is generally classed as easy, but that rating assumes calm weather and sensible footwear: underfoot it is mostly pathless coastal ground with grassy sections, uneven turf, occasional boggy patches, and a few fence crossings without stiles. In dry, settled conditions it feels like a relaxed half-day outing; in wind or rain, the exposed coastline can make it feel more serious. (walkhighlands.co.uk)
From the car park, a short approach leads toward Minn Beach, one of the most striking coastal features in this part of Shetland. The beach sits beside a tombolo—a narrow bar of sand and shingle linking West Burra to Kettla Ness. This landform is a major highlight in itself: one side is a beautiful sandy sweep, while the other is stonier and more exposed. The crossing out toward Kettla Ness is low-lying and open, so after heavy weather it can feel very exposed to wind coming off the Atlantic. (walkhighlands.co.uk)
The first 1 to 1.5 km / 0.6 to 0.9 miles are gentle and visually dramatic rather than strenuous, with the sea close by and broad views opening south and west. Once beyond the beach, the loop becomes a classic Shetland coastal wander: no engineered trail for long stretches, just a natural line over short grass, moorland, and cliff-top ground. The ascent is spread out in small rises rather than one big climb, so the elevation gain is rarely noticed as a sustained effort. (walkhighlands.co.uk)
The western side of the circuit is the more rugged half. Here the coastline becomes increasingly broken, with cliffs, geos, rocky inlets, and sea-worn edges that demand attention in strong wind. As you continue toward The Heugg, the terrain narrows and the scenery becomes more dramatic. A short out-and-back to the tip is worthwhile, with a cairn and expansive views over the surrounding sea and skerries. This section is where the route feels wildest, even though the overall distance remains modest. (walkhighlands.co.uk)
After The Heugg, the loop bends around toward Groot Ness and the eastern side of Kettla Ness. This return leg is usually gentler in character, with easier gradients and a more open feel. The walking remains uneven in places, but the sense of exposure eases compared with the cliffier western edge. Allow around 2.5 to 3 hours for the full circuit at a steady sightseeing pace, and longer if you stop often for wildlife watching or photography. (walkhighlands.co.uk)
Minn Beach is the obvious star at the start, but the route’s real appeal is the variety packed into a short loop: sandy shore, tombolo, moorland, cliff edge, stacks, geos, and open sea views. Seasonal flowers can brighten the coastal turf, and in early summer the headland is especially attractive. The area is also known for seals and breeding seabirds, including Arctic skuas and Arctic terns. These birds can be highly defensive in nesting season, so it is important to keep to the edge of nesting areas and avoid lingering where birds are agitated. (shetland.org)
Because this is a quiet, lightly managed coastal landscape, hikers should watch for hidden wet ground, slippery grass above cliffs, and sudden gusts. Keep well back from cliff edges, especially if the turf is soft or
