Loop
“A breezy Hebridean loop sweeps through flowered machair, white sands, lochans, and Atlantic-edge solitude.”
This easy coastal loop on North Uist explores one of the most open and elemental corners of the Outer Hebrides, circling low-lying machair, white-sand shoreline, freshwater lochans, and the exposed headland of Aird an Rùnair, the westernmost point of the main Western Isles chain. The route is generally around 5 km / 3.1 miles, though some mapped versions come out a little longer at roughly 5.75 km / 3.5 miles, with only minimal climbing—effectively flat, though you may gain and lose up to about 35 m / 115 ft in small undulations depending on the exact line you follow. The nearest clear starting point is the Balranald Nature Reserve Visitor Centre near Hougharry, North Uist, rather than a formal street address. Walkhighlands gives the start at grid reference NF705707, and the reserve visitor centre has parking available. If you are converting the trailhead to a known landmark for navigation, RSPB Balranald Visitor Centre, Balranald Nature Reserve, near Hougharry, North Uist is the most useful place name to use. From the start, expect a broad, unfussy outing rather than a steep or technical hike. The walking is typically on waymarked tracks, short grassy sections, machair, and some rougher coastal ground, with a brief beach section possible depending on the exact loop variation and conditions. Under dry weather the terrain is straightforward, but after rain some grassy or peaty patches can feel soft underfoot. Because the route is so exposed, wind is often the main factor that changes the difficulty more than distance or ascent. (walkhighlands.co.uk)
The first part of the loop leads out across machair, the fertile shell-sand grassland that makes the west side of the Uists so distinctive. This is one of the great landscape features of the Hebrides: low, flower-rich, and closely tied to traditional crofting. In early summer, the machair can be especially colorful, while later in the season it becomes more about wide skies, grasses, and birdlife. (walkhighlands.co.uk)
As the route continues, the coast opens out toward Tràigh nam Faoghailean, a large intertidal beach south of Hougharry. The shoreline here is broad and pale, with shifting light, shallow water, and long views that can make the walk feel much bigger than its modest mileage suggests. Coastal research describing the area notes Tràigh nam Faoghailean as an exceptionally large intertidal beach, and the headland of Aird an Rùnair is built in part from the same sand system. Farther out, the loop reaches the more remote edge of the peninsula. This is the most dramatic section, where the land narrows and the Atlantic becomes the dominant presence. On clear days there are views toward the Monach Isles, and this outer section has a real sense of exposure despite the lack of climbing. The route then bends around the headland and returns beside the coast and lochans, keeping the walking varied even though the terrain remains almost level. (walkhighlands.co.uk)
The standout landmark is Aird an Rùnair itself, a low but significant promontory marking the western edge of North Uist. It is well known for seabird watching, and the surrounding reserve is one of the best places in the Uists to look for birdlife associated with machair, shore, and freshwater margins. Walkhighlands highlights terns, oystercatchers, plovers, and the possibility of hearing or seeing corncrakes in season, while local visitor information notes gannets offshore, especially linked to the huge breeding colony on St Kilda. Freshwater lochs near the coast add another habitat type, so the walk is not just a beach circuit. These lochans often attract waders and waterbirds, and the mix of sea, dune, mach
