“A windswept Harris circuit threads shimmering lochs, tidal edges, and boggy moor through vast, lonely beauty.”
This 15 km (9.3 mile) loop in South Harris is a gentle, open-country circuit with only around 200 m (about 656 ft) of ascent, so the challenge is less about steep climbing and more about exposure, wet ground, and confident route-following across a big Hebridean landscape. The route lies near Rodel on the Isle of Harris, close to St Clement’s Church, Rodel, HS5 3TW, which is the clearest nearby landmark and the most useful reference point for planning arrival. Rubha Reamhar is identified near Lingerbay and Rodel, and Loch Bearastadh Mòr sits beside the A859 on Harris, helping place the loop in the southeastern part of the island. (mapcarta.com)
Expect a broad mix of moorland, lochside walking, rough coastal margins, and old track or faint path rather than a heavily engineered trail. For an easy-rated outing, the mileage is still substantial, so it suits walkers who are comfortable being out for several hours in changeable weather. On paper the elevation gain is modest, but peat hags, soft verges, wet grass, and uneven ground can make progress slower than the numbers suggest. Using HiiKER for the route line is especially helpful here because the terrain in Harris often looks deceptively simple while offering few obvious waymarks on the ground. (hiiker.app)
The opening section is likely to feel spacious and quiet almost immediately, with the road and settlement behind you giving way to open moor and water. Loch an Sgoltaire and Loch Bearastadh Mòr set the tone for the walk: low, reflective water bodies edged by peatland, rock, and rough grass, with long views if the cloud lifts. Around Rubha Reamhar, the character becomes more coastal, with headland scenery and a stronger sense of the sea pressing into the landscape. Loch Saile is particularly notable because it is a tidal loch, so this part of the route has a different feel from the inland freshwater lochs, with saltwater influence and a more maritime atmosphere. Because the ascent is spread out, there are no major climbs to brace for, but there will be short rises and dips that gradually add up. A reasonable way to think about the route is in thirds: an easier settling-in section near the start, a middle portion where the ground can feel more remote and path definition may weaken, and a final return where tired legs notice every boggy patch and cambered section. Even on an easy route, waterproof footwear and windproof layers are sensible because South Harris is exposed and weather can move in quickly from the Minch. General trail timing on HiiKER-style route data should always be treated as approximate, since wind and underfoot conditions can change the pace dramatically. (hiiker.app)
The lochs are the defining landmarks here. Loch Bearastadh Mòr is a clear geographic anchor beside the A859, while Loch Saile adds a sea-loch element to the circuit. The surrounding landscape is classic Harris: rock outcrops,
