“A windswept Hebridean circuit over moor and rock reveals shimmering lochans, sea horizons, and Harris beyond.”
This easy North Uist circuit of around 8 km / 5 miles with roughly 200 m / 656 ft of ascent explores a classic Outer Hebrides landscape of low rocky hills, scattered lochans, open moor, and wide views toward the sea and the Harris hills. The route is centered on Grosa Cleit, a modest summit of about 183 m / 600 ft, near Airigh Iain Oig and the hamlet of Grosebay on North Uist. (mapcarta.com)
Although the mileage and ascent are gentle by hillwalking standards, this is not a manicured park walk. Expect a mixture of rough moorland, wet ground, peat, rock, and faint or intermittent trods rather than a continuously built path. In dry weather it feels like a relaxed half-day outing; after rain, or in windy Atlantic conditions, it can feel more serious than the “easy” rating suggests. Waterproof footwear, a windproof layer, and confident route-finding are sensible even for strong walkers. For navigation, it is best to carry the route on HiiKER and check the line carefully before leaving the road.
The walk is on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, with the nearest useful landmark being Grosebay / Airigh Iain Oig, east of the island’s main road network and within reach of Lochmaddy, the island’s main ferry port and service center. Grosa Cleit is specifically noted as being near Airigh Iain Oig and Grosebay, which is the clearest nearby landmark for planning arrival. (mapcarta.com)
By car: most walkers will approach from Lochmaddy or elsewhere on North Uist via the A867 and local minor roads. Parking is usually informal in this part of the island, so use only obvious roadside space without blocking gates, passing places, or croft access. Because many Hebridean roads are single track, allow extra time and drive with care.
By public transport: North Uist is served by island bus services, and the official Outer Hebrides visitor information points travelers to the current downloadable timetables for Berneray, North Uist, Grimsay, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay. (visitouterhebrides.co.uk) Bus coverage on North Uist is useful along the main corridors, especially around Lochmaddy and the main road network, but service to smaller townships can be limited, so check the latest timetable before committing to the walk. Nearby North Uist accommodation listings also note that some properties are on a public transport route, which reflects that buses do serve parts of the island, though not every trailhead directly. (visitouterhebrides.co.uk) If arriving from the mainland or other islands, Lochmaddy is the most practical transport hub to work from.
The outing begins in a landscape that immediately feels distinctively Uist: a patchwork of rock ribs, heather, sedge, peat, and water. The first section is usually the softest underfoot, with damp moor and small boggy patches around the loch margins. Progress is rarely steep, but it can be uneven, so the pace is often slower than the distance suggests.
As you gain height on Grosa Cleit, the ground becomes rockier and firmer in places. At around 183 m / 600 ft, the summit is not high, but on North Uist that is enough to open up a broad panorama over the island’s famous “waterscape” of countless lochs and inlets. Grosa Cleit’s mapped elevation and position near Airigh Iain Oig and Grosebay make it the natural viewpoint of the circuit. (mapcarta.com) On a clear day, expect long views across the interior loch country and outward toward the surrounding sea; elsewhere on North Uist, even similarly modest hills are noted for exceptional views over the island’s maze of lochans and toward Harris, which gives a good sense of what this route offers as well.
