“A steep, dramatic ridge above Loch Quoich packs big mountain character into a surprisingly compact circuit.”
This is a short, steep Munro circuit above the north side of Loch Quoich, climbing three tops in one outing: Gleouraich, Creag Coire na Fiar Bhealaich, and Spidean Mialach. Although the round is only about 12 km / 7.5 miles, the ascent is substantial at roughly 1,100 m / 3,610 ft, so it feels much bigger than the mileage suggests. The terrain is a mix of excellent stalkers’ paths, steep mountain climbing, rocky ridge walking, and a long descent that can feel punishing on tired legs. The two main summits are Gleouraich at 1,035 m / 3,396 ft and Spidean Mialach at 996 m / 3,268 ft, linked by a high ridge with dramatic corries dropping away to the north. (walkhighlands.co.uk)
The start is on the minor road along Loch Quoich, west of Invergarry, near a lay-by by the hydro building at the foot of Allt Coire Peitireach, a recognised starting point for this route. A useful nearest landmark is Quoich Hydro / the hydro building on the north side of Loch Quoich, a few miles beyond Quoich Dam on the single-track lochside road. Older route notes place the start just over 3 miles / 5 km beyond the dam, while other descriptions identify the lay-by beside the hydro building and rhododendrons as the usual parking spot. (ukhillwalking.com)
Getting there is easiest by car. From Invergarry, follow the A87 briefly, then turn onto the minor road running beside Loch Garry and onward to Loch Quoich; continue past Quoich Dam to the roadside parking near the hydro building. This is a remote single-track approach, so allow extra time, drive carefully, and be prepared for passing places and limited facilities. Public transport is extremely limited here, and there is effectively no direct public transport to the trailhead, so anyone attempting it without a car usually has to combine long-distance bus or rail to Invergarry/Fort William area with a taxi for the final approach. The route begins on a very good stalkers’ path, one of the reasons this outing is more manageable than the map first suggests. The first section climbs steadily and efficiently into the corrie, gaining height quickly above Loch Quoich. Expect the first 3 to 4 km / 1.9 to 2.5 miles to do most of the hard work, with around 800 m / 2,625 ft of ascent before the ridge is reached. The path quality is often surprisingly good for such a remote setting, but the gradient is unrelenting and can feel relentless in wet, windy, or hot conditions. (walkhighlands.co.uk)
As height is gained, the views open dramatically across Loch Quoich toward the Knoydart peaks, especially Sgùrr na Cìche and the rougher mountains to the south and west. The upper approach to Gleouraich becomes more mountainous, with looser, rockier ground and a stronger sense of exposure as the summit cone is approached. In poor visibility, this is where careful line-finding matters most, and HiiKER is the navigation tool to have ready before leaving the car. (walkhighlands.co.uk)
Gleouraich is the high point of the day and usually the first major objective. Its summit gives wide views over Loch Quoich, Glen Shiel, and the surrounding Northwest Highlands. If cloud is down, the summit can feel broad and confusing enough to warrant a careful bearing before committing to the ridge onward.
From Gleouraich, the route continues east along the connecting ridge. This is the most scenic part of the outing: a high traverse with steep northern corries, a real sense of space, and constant changes in angle as the ridge rises and falls. Creag Coire na Fiar Bhealaich is the intermediate top on this section, and while it is not the headline summit, it adds shape and interest to the traverse. Allow roughly 2 km / 1.2 miles from Gleouraich across the ridge to Spidean Mialach, with several smaller reasc
