“Embark on the White Coomb trail for a historical hike amidst waterfalls, wildlife, and Scottish vistas.”
The White Coomb trail, nestled in the Moffat Hills near Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, offers hikers a chance to explore the scenic beauty of the Southern Uplands. This approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) out-and-back route begins near the Grey Mare's Tail Nature Reserve, a notable landmark featuring one of Scotland's most spectacular waterfalls.
Getting to the Trailhead To reach the starting point of the White Coomb trail, hikers can drive to the car park at the Grey Mare's Tail Nature Reserve, which is the nearest significant landmark. For those relying on public transport, buses from nearby towns such as Moffat can drop you off close to the reserve, from where you can walk to the trailhead.
The Ascent Embarking on the trail, you'll experience an elevation gain of around 500 metres (1640 feet), which contributes to its medium difficulty rating. The path initially follows the tail of the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall, allowing for stunning views of the cascading water. As you ascend, the terrain becomes more rugged, with steep sections that may require a bit of scrambling.
Landmarks and Wildlife Continuing upwards, you'll pass Loch Skeen, a glacial loch that's a perfect spot for a rest while admiring the local wildlife, including the rare black-throated divers and peregrine falcons. The surrounding area is rich in history, with the hills playing a significant role during the Border Wars between Scotland and England.
Reaching the Summit Upon reaching the summit of White Coomb, standing at 821 metres (2694 feet), hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding Moffat Hills and, on clear days, across the border into England. The summit itself is marked by a cairn, a traditional Scottish pile of stones, which serves as a waypoint for hikers.

Flora and Fauna The area is home to a diverse range of flora, including heather-clad moorland and peat bogs, which are characteristic of the Scottish landscape. Keep an eye out for red deer and birds of prey, which are commonly sighted along the trail.
Return Journey After soaking in the views and perhaps enjoying a picnic at the summit, hikers will follow the same path back down to the trailhead. The descent offers a different perspective of the landscape and a chance to capture photos of the Grey Mare's Tail from various angles.
Preparation Before setting out, ensure you have appropriate gear for the Scottish weather, which can be unpredictable. Waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and a map or GPS device are essential. Also, check the weather forecast and plan your hike accordingly.
