“Craggy Screel and sweeping Bengairn deliver a richly varied coastal hill loop with glorious Solway views.”
This is a compact but rewarding hill circuit on the Solway coast of Dumfries and Galloway, linking the rocky top of Screel Hill with the broader mass of Bengairn before looping back by Troudale Gill. Expect roughly 9.1 km / 5.7 miles overall, with about 482 m / 1,581 ft of ascent, which makes it a solid medium outing rather than an easy stroll. HiiKER lists the route as a loop and estimates around 2 hours 37 minutes, though many walkers will want longer for views, rougher ground, and summit stops. (hiiker.app)
The start is on the minor road between Gelston and Auchencairn at the Screel Wood forestry car park, about 10.5 km / 6.5 miles south of Castle Douglas and just under 4 km / 2.5 miles north of Auchencairn on the A711 corridor. A practical nearest landmark is Screel Wood car park, off the A711 between Gelston and Auchencairn, near Castle Douglas, DG7 area. The smaller official Screel Hill walk leaflet gives the parking location as grid reference NX800547. (info.dumgal.gov.uk)
From the car park, the route begins on good forest and estate tracks, so the opening feels straightforward. That changes as soon as the path steepens through woodland and then breaks out onto open hillside. Screel Hill rises quickly for its height, and the climb can feel punchy because much of the gain is packed into a short distance. One source notes about 3 km / 1.9 miles and 330 m / 1,083 ft just to reach Screel’s summit, which gives a fair idea of how direct the ascent feels. (fabulousnorth.com)
The loop mixes several walking styles in a short distance: forestry track, narrower hill path, rocky summit ground, rough grassland, heather, and potentially wet or uneven sections on the connecting ground toward Bengairn and around Troudale Gill. The official local leaflet for Screel describes parts of the terrain as hard-surfaced track, beaten earth, and rough grassland that can be soft and steep, and recommends boots as essential. That advice applies even more strongly if continuing beyond Screel into the full loop. (info.dumgal.gov.uk)
Screel itself is the sharper, rockier hill of the pair, topped at 344 m / 1,129 ft and marked by a large cairn. Bengairn is the higher neighbour and the parent summit of Screel, with the two hills forming a very distinctive skyline above this stretch of coast. The connecting section gives the walk its variety: after the more obvious pathwork on Screel, the onward ground can feel more open, heathery, and less manicured, so this is a route where checking the line on HiiKER before setting out is worthwhile, especially in mist or after heavy rain. Screel Hill is famous locally for outsized views compared with its modest height. On clear days, the outlook stretches over the Solway Firth, Auchencairn Bay, Orchardton Bay, Hestan Island, and across to the Cumbrian coast. The Dumfries and Galloway walking leaflet specifically mentions views toward Silloth, Maryport, Workington, and Whitehaven, with higher Lakeland fells such as Skiddaw, Grasmoor, Great Gable, and Scafell Pike visible in good conditions. It also notes views inland to the Queensberry range, Cairnsmore of Carsphairn, and the Rhins of Kells. (info.dumgal.gov.uk)
The summit area of Screel is rocky and dramatic rather than broad and grassy, with outcrops and cairned high points giving the hill a craggy character. Bengairn, by contrast, feels more expansive and moorland-like. Older route notes describe a trig pillar, shelter, and large cairn on Bengairn, plus views over Almorness and the islands off the coast. Troudale Gill adds another change of mood. The name points to a narrow burn-cut gill or ravine, and forestry planning documents for the area refer to steep ground and woodland around the top of Troudale Gill. That usually means a
