Lagoa do Fogo

This out-and-back route climbs from the south side of São Miguel to the shoreline of Lagoa do Fogo, covering about 10.2 km / 6.3 miles in total. Although some listings rate the official trail as moderate, hikers should treat it as a difficult day hike if they are not used to sustained climbing, uneven ground, and a long return ascent from the lake. Expect roughly 700 m / 2,300 ft of elevation change overall, with the steepest effort concentrated on the way up from the trailhead and again on the return climb away from the lakeshore. Getting to the start

What the route is like

From the start, the trail heads inland on a dirt track and begins climbing through a landscape shaped by water. One of the defining features here is the network of levadas, water collection points, channels, and hydro-related infrastructure associated with Ribeira da Praia. These are not incidental details; they are part of the character of the walk and part of the reason the route matters historically.
