“Follow Hornbecks Creek through cool, shaded bends to a hidden rock‑walled waterfall and round pool.”
This is a short, low-effort waterfall walk that follows Hornbecks Creek through deep shade to a tucked-away cascade framed by rock walls and a round plunge pool. Expect about 3 km / 1.9 mi round-trip (out-and-back) with very gentle grades overall; even though it feels mostly flat, there are small ups and downs along the old roadbed and around creek bends. The National Park Service lists the Lower Hornbecks Creek Trail as 1 mile / 1.6 km one-way with about 110 ft / 34 m of elevation change, which lines up well with a ~3 km return hike. (nps.gov)
By car: The most reliable “pin” for the start is the Lower Hornbecks Creek Trailhead parking pull-offs on U.S. Route 209 in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, just south of Chestnut Hill Road (the park describes it as US 209 mile marker 10.4 with a short gravel drive to the trailhead). If you’re using HiiKER for navigation, search for “Lower Hornbecks Creek Trailhead (US 209)” or “Hornbecks Creek / Indian Ladders” and confirm you’re on the US‑209 side (not the separate “Indian Ladder Falls” at Skytop). Parking is limited at the small lot down the narrow dirt/gravel spur, with additional roadside/overflow parking nearby depending on conditions. (nps.gov)
By public transport: Seasonal service in this park can be surprisingly workable. Monroe County Transit Authority’s River Runner shuttle runs along the Pennsylvania side of the recreation area and is designed to connect major river access points and trailheads along/near US 209. Use HiiKER to identify the closest River Runner stop to the Hornbecks Creek/US‑209 corridor, then plan a short road-walk only if it’s clearly safe and legal where you are (shoulders can be narrow). (gomcta.com)
From the US‑209 trailhead, you’re essentially walking an old roadbed that stays close to Hornbecks Creek. The tread is usually obvious and family-friendly, but it’s a creekside trail in the Poconos—so after rain or snowmelt, expect mud, slick leaves, and wet roots in shaded stretches.
