Loop
“Stroll shaded boardwalks and footbridges from waterfall to waterfall, where cool gorge air echoes—watch for slick steps.”
This easy loop is a short, mostly level walk of about 3 km (1.9 mi) with ~0 m (0 ft) of climbing, built around a series of boardwalks, footbridges, and well-managed paths that weave through a shaded hemlock-and-hardwood gorge. Expect a “waterfall-to-waterfall” feel: you’re rarely far from rushing water, mossy rock walls, and the sound of the creek echoing through the ravine.
By car: Aim for the main visitor entrance to Bushkill Falls, a major attraction in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania. The start is effectively at the Bushkill Falls Visitor Area / main parking off Bushkill Falls Road near the community of Bushkill, PA, a few miles from the Delaware Water Gap area. If you plug “Bushkill Falls, Bushkill, PA” into your GPS, it will route you to the correct entrance and parking.
By public transport: Direct public transit to the entrance is limited in this part of the Poconos. The most workable approach is: - Take intercity bus service toward East Stroudsburg / Stroudsburg, PA (the nearest larger transit hub), then - Use a rideshare/taxi for the final leg to Bushkill Falls (the last stretch is rural and not reliably served by local buses). If you’re planning a car-free day, check seasonal schedules ahead of time and build in extra time for the last-mile connection.
Although the elevation gain is listed as near zero, the loop typically includes short stair sets and gentle undulations as the path negotiates the gorge edges and crosses the creek. The tread is a mix of: - Boardwalk and timber steps (often damp from spray) - Packed gravel/dirt paths - Bridge crossings with railings
Because this is a waterfall gorge, slick surfaces are the main “difficulty” factor rather than steepness. After rain—or during spring runoff—expect wet boards, puddled approaches, and occasional spray zones near the falls.
Within the first 0.5 km (0.3 mi) you’ll usually settle into the gorge environment: cooler air, thicker shade, and the creek tightening between rock walls. The loop’s highlights come in quick succession:
Plan on frequent stops: even at an easy pace, the loop can take 45–90 minutes depending on crowding at viewpoints and how long you linger.
This is classic Pocono Plateau / Delaware Water Gap region forest: mixed hardwoods with evergreen pockets, dense understory in summer, and excellent visibility through the trees in late fall.
What you might see: - Birdlife: songbirds in the canopy; near water, listen for calls that carry through the gorge. - Amphibians: salamanders and frogs are common in moist, shaded creek corridors—watch your step on damp trail edges. - Mammals: white-tailed deer are possible, though crowds can make sightings less frequent during peak hours.
What to look out for: - Slippery boardwalks and steps: The combination of mist, algae, and leaf litter can make traction unpredictable. - Black flies/mosquitoes: Late spring through summer can be buggy in shaded, wet corridors—bring repellent. - Ticks: Common in Pennsylvania from spring through fall; do a post-hike check, especially if you brush against vegetation. - Cold, damp microclimate: Even on warm days, the gorge can feel cooler—pack a light layer if you chill easily.
Even though the paths are generally well-defined, it’s still smart to download the route on HiiKER before you arrive. Use it to: - Confirm you’re on the intended loop option (some waterfall parks have multiple color-coded routes) - Estimate time between viewpoints - Keep track of where you are if you pause often and lose your sense of direction in the network of walkways
Bushkill Falls sits within the broader Delaware Water Gap / Pocono landscape, an area shaped by long-term river and creek erosion that carved steep-sided
