This medium-difficulty trail is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the vicinity of Dodge Park, a well-known landmark in the area. For those using public transport, the nearest major transit hub is in Gresham, Oregon. From Gresham, you can take a local bus or rideshare service to Dodge Park, which is approximately 15 miles (24 km) away.
For navigation, the HiiKER app is highly recommended. It provides detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on track throughout your hike.
As you embark on the trail, you'll first encounter the lush greenery typical of the region. The trail meanders through dense forests of Douglas fir and western red cedar, offering a serene canopy overhead. About 0.5 km (0.3 miles) in, you'll come across a small wooden bridge crossing a tributary of the Sandy River. This is a great spot for a quick rest and some photos.
Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer, raccoons, and a variety of bird species such as the Steller's jay and the northern flicker. The underbrush is rich with ferns, Oregon grape, and salal, adding to the trail's lush atmosphere.
The area around the Sandy River has a rich history. It was originally inhabited by the Clackamas people, a Native American tribe. The river itself was named by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. As you hike, consider the historical significance of the land and the people who once called it home.
Approximately 1.5 km (0.93 miles) into the hike, you'll reach a viewpoint overlooking the Sandy River. This spot offers a panoramic view of the river valley and is an excellent place to take a break and enjoy the scenery. The elevation gain to this point is about 50 meters (164 feet), making it a moderate climb.
Continuing on, the trail loops back through a more open area, where you'll find wildflowers in bloom during the spring and summer months. The final stretch of the trail descends gently back towards the starting point, completing the loop.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have the HiiKER app handy for any unexpected detours. Make sure to bring plenty of water, wear sturdy hiking boots, and be prepared for changing weather conditions, as the Pacific Northwest is known for its unpredictable climate.
